Microsoft, together with ConsenSys, an NYC based venture production studio, and Blockstack Labs, a venture company that builds blockchain based software, will come together to build an 'open-source, self-sovereign, blockchain-based identity system. Around 1.5 billion people, or a 1/5 of the worlds population, do not have proper legal identification. The goal of these 3 companies would be to provide every person in the world with legal identification.
ConsenSys would try to solve this with the introduction of uPort, a solution that allows civilians to control their own online identities. Identities will be securely hosted in Ethereum's block Hain, and can be shared by users whenever they chose. Microsoft's Azure service will make it easy to deploy the new Blockstack servers and infrastructure, and even has plans to integrate Blockstack with its own systems for identity and authentication. Using the platform, users will be able to hold attributes such as drivers license and tax return info.
