Earlier this month at WinHEC, Microsoft announced a couple of updates coming to Cortana on Windows 10. One of the most noteworthy announcements from the conference was Cortana coming to Windows 10 IoT Core. At the event, Microsoft announced that Cortana will be coming to IoT devices with the Windows 10 Creators Update. Today, the firm is introducing Cortana to Windows Insiders running Windows 10 IoT Core. The company today released Windows 10 IoT Core Build 14993 to Insiders, which includes a number of improvements along with Cortana.
Cortana coming to Windows 10 IoT Core is quite huge as it will allow device manufacturers to integrate Cortana into almost anything. For instance, your next fridge may have Cortana or even your thermostat may have Cortana built-in. Having Cortana on things like fridges, toasters, or even thermostat may sound pretty weird but being able to control things like this with your voice is indeed quite stupendous. Cortana on Windows 10 IoT Core is essentially the Cortana on Windows 10 PCs, meaning that all of Cortana's capabilities should be available on your IoT devices. Do keep in mind that Windows 10 IoT Core devices will be required to have a display to be able to run Cortana. However, it is worth noting that Microsoft also recently announced the Cortana Devices SDK which allows device manufacturers to build Cortana right into devices that don't have a display — in fact, Microsoft has already teamed up with Harman-Kardon for a speaker powered by Cortana, similar to Amazon's Echo devices.
