Surface Dial gets the iFixit treatment, attains a “4” repairability score

After its Surface Studio teardown earlier this week, iFixit has also shared its thoughts on Microsoft's newest peripheral device – the Surface Dial.

The Surface Dial is a new interaction tool for Microsft, it adds new interactions to apps like Sketchable, Spotify and OneNote among others. It has been hailed as one of the more interesting pieces of the Surface Studio launch, and it also works with legacy devices like the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book.

If you're one who likes to fix your own devices, on the other hand, iFixit notes that the Surface Dial isn't very self-repairable – giving it a rating of "4". While you can easily change the batteries, that's just about all you can do without the possibility of damage. Most of the components inside it are integrated and removing them in order to do DIY replacement will end up damaging it. The haptic vibration motor is glued down, and the main access point is well-hidden with iFixit pointing out that you'll need some "courage" to even think about it.

In conclusion, Microsoft's Surface Dial is a well built and sturdy device, but it is not one which is suited to enterprising users who want to engage in DIY.  If your Surface Dial fails, it is better you use Microsoft's hardware warranty to replace it rather than attempt an easily botched self-repair.
