Gears of War 4’s Social Quickplay playlist gets cross-play

Gears of War 4 was The Coalition's first take on the series, and it introduced some changes that weren't necessarily related to gameplay. The biggest of them all was that it was an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning that any digital purchase of the game on either Windows 10 or the Xbox One would let you play the game on both platforms.

Cross-play means that players on multiple platforms can play together, and both the game's campaign and horde modes supported this since they were co-op. This didn't apply to the game's competitive multiplayer for somewhat obvious reasons, though: mouse and keyboard players had far more precision when aiming than players using controllers, and it would leave Xbox One players on the losing side every time.

That's how it seemed, at least.

The Coalition began running tests at the end of last November to see just how well cross-play worked in competitive multiplayer, and the results were surprising: Xbox One and Windows 10 players with similar skill ratings had similar results for average K/D, score, and kills each match. Lobbies also had 5% more players than usual, too.

It ended up being a winning change for players on both platforms, and both The Coalition and the community came to the same conclusion: it worked. Because of this, the Social Quickplay playlist in multiplayer is intended to permanently support cross-play. The first few months will act as a much larger test than before, and if results stay consistent with the original test data, it'll likely stay that way forever.

This change doesn't apply to Core or Competitive, though, as ranked matches still need to be precise as possible. In order to get more players on Windows 10 interested in both modes, there will apparently be some changes made to them in the future as well.

Do you regularly play Gears of War 4's multiplayer? Do you think this is a change for the better? Let us know in the comments below!
