Slack today announced some new improvements coming to its Guest Access feature. The company is adding two new features to Guest Access to improve the experience for team admins.
Firstly, the company is adding the ability to set a time limit to guest access. When a user invites someone to a team, they will now be able to remove the access at a certain date. When you limit someone, the admin of the team and the guest will get notified 2 days before the access is deactivated. This is a really great feature for Slack admins, as they no longer have to manually deactivate the guest accounts. Plus, the feature lets users extend the guest access by a certain amount of days which is also pretty handy.
In addition to time limits for guest access, Slack is also putting more information on the guest profiles — allowing users to easily know who invited a guest, and when the guest's access to the team/channel will be deactivated. The improved profile card for guests will also show whether they are a single-channel guest or a multi-channel guest.
Slack's improved guest access takes its service a step further. One of its biggest competitors, Microsoft's Teams service, is yet to bring Guest Access to its platform. Guest Access is expected to arrive later this June for Microsoft Teams, but whether the feature will offer the extra management options like Slack is still unknown. However, considering the fact that Teams is an Office 365 service, admins should be able to control a lot of the options for Guest Access. But we will have to wait and see.
As for Slack, the improved guest access is rolling out worldwide today. Keep in mind that Guest Access on Slack isn't available to teams using the free plan of the service.
