HoloLens developer units are shipping with an app called HoloTour which allows people to transport to a different location and experience it like they are really there. They can see high-resolution 360-degree panoramic displays of places like Rome and Machu Picchu allowing them to enjoy a virtual trip by actually walking around the location and get up close to objects while remaining untethered from a PC, phone or other device. Microsoft today posted a video talking about this HoloTour app and how developers can build similar apps taking advantages of the mixed-reality capabilities of Hololens.
Feel like you're really there as you travel back in time to explore ancient Rome or uncover the secrets of Machu Picchu. A combination of 360-degree video, spatial sound, and holographic scenery are the foundations of a virtual travel tour app that lets you naturally interact with elements of each tour in your real world.
