The Microsoft HoloLens is all about mixed reality while the HTC Vive is the leading virtual reality headset, but it does not mean they can't take part in a shared reality, as demonstrated in the video above by Drew Gottlieb.
In the video he uses his software and a Microsoft HoloLens to allow users to peek into the virtual reality world an HTC Vive user is experiencing, freeing spectators from the need to peer at a PC monitor to appreciate the virtual environment the Vive user is seeing.
His app, HoloViveObserver, uses the Unity's built-in networking and matchmaking service to connect the HoloLens to the VR session, and features an "alignment mode" using a real and virtual controller, to ensure the two worlds share the same spatial coordinates. There's no limit on how many people can join in, with more than one HoloLens supported.
Gottlieb, who is currently an intern at Google, feels this kind of mixed space will be a big part of the future, especially for creative industries.
He has made the software open source, for the extremely lucky who have access to both a Vive and a Hololens. That can be found here.
