Battlefield 1’s campaign gets a trailer

battlefield-1

Battlefield 1 brings the franchise back in time, taking it from the modern day to the very first World War. In a way it harkens back to the beginnings of the franchise, but takes it even further back than 1942. World War I is an era that games don't explore very often, and there's a lot of areas (both physical and thematic) that could be explored in a campaign. Battlefield 1's open beta already showed that the game's multiplayer was treating the setting with respect, and the game's new trailer for its single player campaign looks like it does, too.

According to the game's developers on the official Battlefield blog, the campaign will be split up into "war stories". Each one of these focuses on a different protagonist, and each protagonist has their own abilities and background. Each war story is meant to be personal – they're about the people fighting the war, rather than the war itself.

Not all of the people the game will focus on will be fictional, either. One of those characters happens to be T. E. Lawrence – better known as Lawrence of Arabia. One of the war stories places you in the shoes of a resourceful Arab rebel who works with Lawrence, and you'll need to be crafty to survive.

Some might be surprised to see a military FPS focus on telling an emotional story, and it looks like DICE is going to attempt to change that. Battlefield 1 will have much more of a focus on storytelling than previous entries in the franchise, with plenty of the game's cutscenes showing who you're playing as. The goal is for players to see the character and know what they're going through, instead of simply seeing events unfold in first person.

It seems like an interesting attempt at storytelling, and it'll be possible to play through Battlefield 1's campaign when it launches October 21st. If you'd like to pre-order the game digitally for your Xbox One, you can find it here. If you'd like to buy a physical copy from Amazon, you can find that here.
