Developer Submission: Magic Chess 3D – for the fans of classic tabletop and modern revamps

Hello! I'm a member of Academ Media Games' team of developers that create mobile games for a wide range of devices and interests. For our introduction, we'd like to take up quite an ambitious task of trying to overshadow hundreds of other chess applications with our own take on the ancient game — Magic Chess 3D. Preserving the classic gameplay, we did our best to customize the interface and boost usability.

One of the main features of Magic Chess 3D is, without a doubt, its creative, intricate design solutions. We went with the theme of English history and tried to give each type of pieces a unique and period-appropriate look with just a touch of fantasy-style whimsy. With its classy, muted color scheme and light effects, the playing field looks like a cross between a medieval painting and a fairytale book.

Now for usability. It goes without saying that the game has two modes: multiplayer and a match against virtual grandmaster. Magic Chess 3D particularly suitable and attractive for beginners who are still getting the grasp of the basic rules — subtle and non-distracting visual cues are provided to help the player keep in mind all the possible moves of the selected chess piece and weigh the options. More advanced players will appreciate the timer tool that makes things more challenging and contributes to the atmosphere of a real, world-class tournament.

You can get Magic Chess 3D for free on the Windows Store and our official site, or try the PRO version with some extra features for a moderate price.

Developer Submission: OneLocker updated with Windows Hello, Google Drive and camera images import

OneLocker, a UWP password manager available on both Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile, has recently picked up a few major updates that added many user requested features to the app.

The latest version, v1.8.0.0, added Windows Hello support for logging in into the app, so it is now possible to access the app data both by using the master password or a PIN/iris recognition depending on the device in use.

It is now also possible to use the camera to take a picture and directly import it into the app. On Windows 10, it is also possible to resize the image from the camera app before loading the new picture into the app (it's not possible yet on Windows 10 Mobile due to APIs limitations).

The previous update, v1.7.0.0, also added Google Drive integration, so that it is now possible to use it along with OneDrive and Dropbox to sync the database and store/load data backups.

There is also a new update coming in the next few days that will add another few user requested options, like the ability to set a timer for the option to automatically clean the system clipboard after copying a password from the app.

The app is available for $3.99 with a trial version that has some limitations, all the details are at the bottom of the Store description.

Microsoft promises to stop spamming Android Notification Tray with app ads

notd

The new Microsoft is pretty aggressive at promoting their properties and services, be it from Windows 10 using the GWX.exe app on Windows 7, to the Start menu app ads in Windows 10 to now the latest, ads for their Office apps in the Android notification centre.

The ads were noticed by Thom on OSNews who writes:

I have a few questions. First, why is Microsoft sending me an advertisement in my notification tray? Second, why is Word sending me an advertisement for Excel? Third, why is this allowed by Google, even though the Play Store rules prohibit it? Fourth A, why is Microsoft sending me advertisements for products I already have installed? Fourth B, why is Microsoft sending me advertisements for products I already use? Fourth C, why is Microsoft sending me advertisements for products I already pay for because I have an Office 365 subscription? Fifth, who in their right mind at Microsoft thought this was not a 100%, utterly, completely, deeply, ridiculously, unequivocally, endlessly, exquisitely invasive, stupid, aggravating, off-putting, infuriating, and pointless thing to do?

Abusing the notification centre like this is of course against the rules, and Microsoft has now responded by saying they will halt the practice, saying in a comment:

Microsoft is deeply committed to ensuring that we maintain the best possible experience for our customers in addition to complying with all applicable policies. We have taken the action to turn off these notifications. This update will be reflected in the coming days.

Now if only Microsoft was as respectful of the wishes of their Windows 7 users…

Telltale games says the Windows Store offers wider reach than Steam, will port full catalogue there

telltale games

Writing on the Microsoft Blog, Telltale games, who created narrative episodic games such as The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands and, most recently,Minecraft: Story Mode, explained their ease of porting their titles to the Windows Store, and also explained why they chose this new avenue to distribute their wares.

Telltale games has always been cross-platform, and currently supports 14 platforms, including Android, iOS, PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam.

In December 2015 Telltale Games brought Minecraft: Story Mode to the Windows Store by ported their game engine to the Universal Windows Platform (UWP).

The company use the same game engine for all their games, and by porting the engine the game is automatically ported.

"We have a single toolset we use to build content for all those platforms. So we're kind of always in the state of porting. The studio builds the game with our toolset. And then that same code base cross-compiles to every single platform we're going to support," said Zac Litton, Telltale's VP of Tech.

Zac estimates that it took a couple of developers only about three months to go from an initial build to getting Minecraft: Story Mode shipping on the new platform, and that's with the added complication of upgrading from DirectX9 to DirectX 11.

"We started with a PC DirectX 9 engine version," said Benn Herrera, senior software engineers, "and the Xbox One DirectX 11 with Xbox extensions engine and sort of combined these build configurations to create a desktop DirectX 11 version—and then did the UWP version. So that first initial step is one not a lot of developers are going to have, because most of them are going to probably be starting from DX11. So if you skip that part, the transition to working with UWP was fairly straightforward."

With that work done porting the game, the company now plans to bring the rest of its catalogue to the store also.

"Our strategy will be to bring our back catalog over there because that's the reason we do ports to platforms," Zac noted. "Minecraft is the first, because obviously it's a good title for the audience who is using the Windows Store. But yes—we intend to bring everything out this year as soon as we can."

Telltale games notes that while Steam was their starting place, it lacked the sheer breadth of reach, particularly to casual and first-time gamers, that the Windows Store and UWP could offer. In short, the port to UWP was a tactical move to allow Telltale to find additional ways to get their games in front of a larger audience of players.

Steam has around 125 million active users, but Windows 10 already has more than 300 million active users, with this number set to rapidly increase over the next 2 years to hit Microsoft's 1 billion target.

Telltale games note that porting to UWP also came with free ARM support, and that they already have a build of their story engine that could be used for Lumia phones running Windows 10 as well as future Windows 10 devices.

"I said, okay, let's have it generate an ARM build and we got it compiling pretty much on the first try. We didn't have a UWP ARM device to test it on. But it was promising that once we solved the configuration problem for one architecture, it looked like we were a really big chunk of the way towards having this available for other processors."

Microsoft notes that by making the choice to bring their game engine to UWP, the team at Telltale Games have opened up many potential paths for their future, one Microsoft obviously hopes other software houses will follow also.

Brazilians demand #NewMobileDevicesInBrazil from Microsoft in online protest

Brazil went from one of the largest market for Windows Phones to Microsoft's redheaded stepchild, with the company declining to release any of the new generation of Windows 10 Mobile devices there, and excluding the region from its short list of focus markets.

This has left loyal Brazilian Windows Phone users confused and angered, and has led leading Brazilian Windows Phone site WindowsTeam.com.br to start a protest organized around the #NewMobileDevicesInBrazil hashtag in which the site asks Microsoft to deliver clarity around future support for the region, and to ideally deliver either the current or next generation of Windows 10 handsets to eager buyers there

So far the hashtag has seen more than 8000 tweets and retweets with users saying:

Fallout 4 mods now available on Xbox One

Fallout 4 featured image mspu

Xbox One gamers can now use mods in Fallout 4. This comes after a quick closed beta on the system for them, and a demonstration by Major Nelson.

Announced in a post on Bethesda's website, the wait for public availability is finally over.

Starting today, we are excited to deliver on something we've wanted to do for a very long time – bring Mods to a console audience. With the latest title update for Fallout 4, Xbox One gamers are now able to browse Mods on Bethesda.net and, more importantly, can directly download and play Mods within the game's main menu.

Mods are designed to be easy to access on any platform, but can only be made on PC. It isn't possible to create them on the Xbox One as the system doesn't have creation kit, so the PC version is needed to make them. After they're created on PC, they're then uploaded to Bethesda.net, where they can be used in both PC and console versions of the game. As mentioned in the quote above, mods can be downloaded on Xbox One from the game's main menu.

There are some limits, however, both legal and technical. Mentioned in an interview with IGN, Todd Howard said there would likely be some legal restrictions, and that's how things have ended up.

"Either your nudity or porn, that kind of stuff, or you're taking assets from Halo," Howard said. "Though, Microsoft might allow that. We'd have to get approval. But like, generally, if someone is using assets from another game, we have to say 'No, you can't do that.'"

Additionally, the Xbox One has a 2GB size limit for mods. However, there's still 889 mods available for the system at the time of writing. If you'd like to check them out, click here.

Fallout 4 is available for $59.99 on the Xbox One store.

Are you going to mod Fallout 4 on your Xbox One? Let us know in the comments below!

Microsoft’s Project Florence lets you talk to your plants… and them talk back

Microsoft's artist in residence has created a technology solution which lets gardeners talk to their plans in a meaningful way, and also have the plans respond in turn.

Post-doc researcher Helene Steiner has placed a plant in a sensor-loaded capsule connected to a computer. Users are able to type messages to the plant, which are analysed for sentiment, which are in turn translated into pulses of light. For instance, a very warm, kind sentiment might appear as long red blinks, because red light causes a plant to flower.

But how does the plant respond with its own message?

Sensors on the leaves and roots, as well as in the soil and air analyse the state of the plant, looking for things like defensive chemical, state of the soil (e.g. wet or too dry) and translate this into its own sentiment reading. The plant's reaction is translated into words by searching twitter for Tweets similar to the plant's sentiment, and echos them back to the gardener.

florence

While you are not going to be able to discuss the football scores with your vegetables (and get a meaningful response back at least) it is easy to get an idea of how the plant is doing from its own words, and it is just this feature which may turn the project from art to applied technology.

"We were kind of caught off guard a little bit, because this raised a lot of visibility across the company," says Asta Roseway, Principal Research Designer at Microsoft Research. "We've been approached by groups across Microsoft in agriculture and urban farming … it's brought together all sorts of folks from multiple fields and disciplines. It's engineers sitting with biologists sitting with software [developers]. That kind of cross-collaboration is essential for emerging technologies."

Microsoft has expanding its research in this field, constructing a hydroponics and aquaponics farm on the campus this summer while Steiner is working with academics on the hardcore science end of the project to better equate and categorize a plant's electrical and chemical responses to more literal meanings.

"I think there are so many aspects where research like this can really open up," says Steiner. "You want to build more sustainable agricultural systems, but there are interesting aspects if you think about responsive environments. You could really think about bringing a natural environment into our technological world, rather than putting technology everywhere into our environment."

So who knows, one day when you came back from work and say hello to your plans, and you may know they need a bit of TLC if they sound a bit off.

SiriusXM now beta testing a Universal Windows App for Windows 10

siiriusxm

In December 2015 we wrote that SiriusXM was planning to develop a Windows 10 app for  "smartphones, tablets and computers", at least according to their support.

Now we have reports that the company is sending out invitations to its subscribers to become beta testers for the app.

They write:

We are establishing a select group of listeners to help us test our Windows 10 app before it is released to all subscribers. We'd like to invite you to be a part of this testing experience. You will gain advance access to the latest versions of the app and have the opportunity to help shape the future of SiriusXM's Windows 10 streaming experience.

Notably however there is no mention of a Windows 10 Mobile app, with the invitation being explicitly for the desktop.

SiriusXM is ia US-based satellite radio system with exclusive content such as the Howard Stern show which is also available via internet streaming.

We heard this morning that Windows 10 is now the most popular Windows in USA, which will hopefully mean more developers will be supporting the platform with great apps going forward.

Windows 10 Mobile Build 14342.1004 released to Insiders in the Slow Ring

DSC01974

Microsoft today released a new build of Windows 10 Mobile to Insiders in the Slow Ring. The company is releasing build 14342.1004 with some new features as well as improvements. The latest build does not include a lot of new features, but it includes some nice new improvements:

Swipe navigation in Microsoft Edge: Since the release of Windows 10 Mobile, our top feedback request for Microsoft Edge has been asking for the return of the swipe gesture to navigate back and forward. With this build, you can now swipe from anywhere on the page to get back to your previous page.

Apps for websites: As we discussed at Build 2016, you will soon be able to redirect certain websites to open with an app instead. This is a new capability so apps that support this are still in progress. In preparation for their availability we have added a new page at Settings > System > Apps for websites where you will be able to manage them. Stay tuned for more on this.

Feedback Hub improvements: We've heard from you that it can sometimes be hard to find which category your feedback belongs in. Now when you create new feedback, the Feedback Hub will suggest categories and subcategories based on the title and description you entered. If you see a suggestion that looks right, just click it to fill in the menus and get your feedback to the right engineers quickly.

Keep in mind that this build is only available to Insiders in the Slow Ring. If you are an Insider, you can get the latest build by heading over to the Settings app, click on Update & Security, and then check for updates. Happy downloading!

Bug Fixes And Known Issues In The First Major HoloLens Development Edition Update

Microsoft today released their first major update for HoloLens development edition with lots of new features like support for running multiple apps, new voice commands and more. Read about the features in detail here. This build also includes several bug fixes and few known issues. Find them below.

Major Fixes:

We fixed issues with hologram spaces where the spaces would be slow or incorrectly detected. We fixed a shutdown issue that could continue to try launching the shell during shutdown.

We fixed an issue

  • that blocks the ability to resume a XAML application.
  • where a crash would leave a black screen and some jagged lines.
  • scrolling would sometimes stick in the wrong direction when using some apps.
  • the power LEDs could indicate an off state when the device was still on.
  • WiFi could get turned off after resuming from standby.
  • the Xbox identity provider offers gamertag setup and then gets stuck in a loop.
  • the Shell occasionally crashes when selecting a downloaded file in the OneDrive File Picker.
  • pressing and holding on a link sometimes both opens a new, broken tab and opens a context menu.
  • where windows device portal didn't allow IPD adjustments from 50 to 80

We fixed issues with Photos where

  • an image would occasionally display rotated due to ignoring the EXIF orientation property.
  • it could crash during start-up on pinned Photos.
  • videos would restart after pausing instead of continuing from where last paused.
  • replay of a shared video could be prevented if it was shared while playing.
  • Mixed Reality Capture recordings would begin with 0.5-1 second of audio only feed.
  • the Sync button disappears during initial OneDrive sync.

We fixed issues with settings where

  • a refresh was needed when the environment changes.
  • 'Enter' on keyboard would not behave like clicking Next in some dialogs.
  • it was hard to know when the clicker failed pairing.
  • it could become unresponsive with WiFi disconnect and connect.

We fixed issues with Cortana where

  • it could get stuck displaying the Listening UI.
  • asking "Hey Cortana, what can I say" from an exclusive mode app would get stuck if you answered maybe rather yes/no to the request to exit the app.
  • the Cortana listening UI doesn't resume correctly if you ask Cortana to go to sleep and then resume.
  • the queries "What network am I connected to?" and the "Am I connected?" could fail when the first network profile comes back with no connectivity.
  • the UI froze on "Listening" but upon exiting an app would immediately began doing speech recognition again.
  • where signing out of the Cortana app wouldn't let you sign back into it until a reboot.
  • it would not launch when Mixed Reality Capture UI was active.

We fixed issues with Visual Studio where

  • background task debugging did not work.
  • frame analysis in the graphics debugger did not work.
  • the HoloLens Emulator did not appear in the drop-down list for Visual Studio unless your project's TargetPlatformVersion was set to 10240.

Changes From Previous Release:

The Cortana command Hey Cortana, reboot the device does not work. User can say Hey Cortana, restart or Hey Cortana, restart the device.

Known Issues:

Visual Studio

  • While you may be able to connect to a HoloLens with Visual Studio 2015 Update 1, there are quite a few known issues that are fixed in Update 2. We recommend Update 2 for all HoloLens development.
  • "DEP0001 : Unexpected Error: -2145615869" – You may see this error if you reboot your device after a debugging session and then try to start debugging again. If you see this, restart Visual Studio and try debugging your app again. This will be fixed in a future Visual Studio update.
  • Users of Visual Studio 15 preview 2 may notice that the option for creating a new Holographic DirectX 11 App is missing from the New Project menu. To work around this, you can use Visual Studio 2015 to create the new project as described in Creating a holographic DirectX project, then close the project and re-open it in Visual Studio 15 preview 2. Users of Visual Studio 15 preview 1 will still be able to create new Holographic DirectX 11 apps using the New Project menu as long as Visual Studio 2015 is also installed.
  • HoloLens device users who receive an update to the latest HoloLens OS may not be able to use the Visual Studio profiler tools or graphics debugger. This affects all device users who had enabled Developer Mode on their devices before receiving the update. When the profiler or graphics debugger is started, users will see an error instructing to reboot the target device. Unfortunately, in this case a reboot will not fix the problem and the error will persist.
    • Workaround: After receiving the OS update, perform a clean reset of your HoloLens device from Settings. This will delete all apps and other saved information on your device, but the OS update will remain. You can then re-enable Developer Mode and use the profiling tools as expected. You will still see an error the first time you launch a profiler prompting you to reboot, but in this case the reboot will resolve the error.

Emulator

  • Not all apps in the Windows Store are compatible with the emulator. For example, Conker and Fragments are not playable on the emulator.
  • You cannot use the PC webcam in the Emulator.
  • The Live Preview feature of the Windows Device Portal does not work with the emulator. You can still capture Mixed Reality videos and images.

Unity

  • Known issues with the Unity HoloLens Technical Preview are documented in the HoloLens Unity forums.
  • Additional steps are needed to enable uGUI support on HoloLens. Please see the HoloLens uGUI post on the Unity forums for more details.
  • Enabling single traversal rendering results in the scene rendering incorrectly.
  • After a while, dictation stops working after reinitializing DictationRecognizer.

Windows Device Portal

  • When using Kiosk Mode, users cannot return to an exclusive app after opening Edge or the soft keyboard.
  • The Live Preview feature in Mixed Reality capture may exhibit several seconds of latency.

API

  • GetPoseForTime can take a long time

The update, which Microsoft is calling the May 2016 update introduces a bunch of new features which a lot of HoloLens users should love. With the latest update, Microsoft is allowing HoloLens users to run three apps simultaneously. The update also brings new voice commands such as "make smaller" and "face me" for Holograms. The update also brings support for Tabs to Microsoft Edge and Peek for Tabs as well.

Microsoft is also adding the ability to resize apps vertically with the latest update. Additionally, users can now use a Bluetooth mouse to control the cursor in their HoloLens which is also a handy new feature.

  • You can now run multiple flat apps, up to three at the same time. This enables endless use cases for multi-tasking in HoloLens. Have the new Feedback Hub with the list of Quests open, while exploring the new features on this flight
  • We've added a bunch of new voice commands:
    • Try looking at a hologram and rotate it by saying "Face me"
    • Change its size by saying "Bigger" / "Smaller"
    • Move an app by saying "Hey Cortana, move Name here."
  • We've made developing on HoloLens easier. You can now browse, upload, and download files through the Windows Device Portal. You can access the Documents folder, Pictures folder, and the local storage for any app you side-loaded or deployed through Visual Studio.
  • The emulator now supports log-in with a Microsoft Account just like you would on a real HoloLens. You can enable this from the Additional Tools menu ">>".
  • 2D Apps now hide the holobar and cursor when watching video full screen to avoid distraction. With this, your video watching experience will be even more enjoyable on HoloLens.
  • You can also pin photos without the app bar in your world .
  • File picker works just like you expect them to on HoloLens.
  • Updated Edge browser to map unified user experience with desktop and phone. We enabled multiple instances of your browser, custom HoloLens new tab page, tab peek, and open in new windows, along with power & performance improvements.
  • Groove Music app is now on HoloLens. Visit the store to download it and try playing in the background.
  • You can easily customize how apps are arranged in your world. Try rotating your holograms in adjust mode by simply click and drag on circle in the middle vertical wireframes. You might notice holograms have tighter fitted bounding boxes to ensure maximized interaction. You can also resize all flat apps vertically (except Photos and Hologram apps).
  • We've made a lot of input improvement in this flight. You can connect a regular Bluetooth mouse to HoloLens. The clicker has been fine tuned to enable resizing & moving holograms with a clicker. Keyboard is also running better than ever.
  • Now you can take mixed reality pictures by simply pressing down the volume up + volume down simultaneously. You can also share your mixed reality captured photos & videos to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
  • The maximum recording length of mixed reality videos has been increased to five minutes.
  • Photos app now streams videos from OneDrive instead of having to download the entire video before playback.
  • We've improved how your holograms will be right where you left them. You will also be presented the option to re-connect to Wi-Fi and try again if HoloLens cannot detect where they are.
  • The keyboard has an improved layout for entering email address with keys that allow you to enter the most popular email domains with a single click.
  • Faster app registration and auto detection of time zone during OOBE, giving you the best first user experience.
  • Storage sense allows you to view remaining and used disk space by the system and apps in the settings app.
  • We have converged Feedback App and Inside Hub into a single app Feedback Hub that will be the go-to tool for giving us feedback, which features you love, which features you could do without, or when something could be better. When you join the Insider Program, you can keep up on get latest Insider news, rate buildsand go on feedback quests from Feedback Hub.

To get the latest update, you just need to head over to the Settings app on your HoloLens and check for updates.

If you own a HoloLens, what do you think of the new features? Discuss in the comment section below.

Microsoft may hold a second WinHec event this year

WinHec 2016 Microsoft

Microsoft's WinHec conference recently took place in China. At the event, Microsoft announced some upcoming changes for Windows 10, mainly focused towards OEMs. Now, it looks like Microsoft may hold a second WinHEC event this year. The event, which Microsoft is calling "WinHec Mixed" is coming this Fall and it will enable OEMs and Microsoft partners to "fully utilize the Windows Mixed."

Welcome! This is a pre-registration page for the WinHEC Mixed coming Fall 2016. This event will provide presentations and hands on labs to enable partners to fully utilize the Windows Mixed. To get updates on this exciting upcoming event, sign up today!

The information about the event was found in a web page which was leaked by Microsoft enthusiast WalkingCat. However, Microsoft later updated the page and removed all the info about WinHec Mixed. Instead, the company is now showing information about the "WinHec Fall Event" which will take place between November 1st and 5th of this year.

While it isn't yet known what Windows Mixed actually is, our guess is that it's something related to Windows Holographic and the HoloLens. Microsoft will likely reveal more about the event in the coming months, and we'll let you know when that is available.

Horror game Agony coming to Xbox One in 2017

agony featured image

The first person horror game Agony is coming to both Xbox One and PC next year. Developed by Madmind Studio, the game places you in the ghostly shoes of an amnesiac spirit that's trapped in Hell.

In an attempt to escape Hell, the player will have to meet with the mystical Red Goddess. Getting to her will be a challenge, however. The protagonist is able to possess lesser demons in an attempt to survive, which gives them the tools they need to survive. They'll also be able to "control people on their path" – which could mean multiple things.

Madmind might be a very new studio, only being formed earlier this year, but their team members definitely have the skill to pull this off.

Our studio comprises veteran game developers, who have worked on numerous AAA titles, such as:

  • The Division,
  • Witcher 3,
  • Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2,
  • Alien Rage,
  • Enemy Front,
  • Real Boxing 2,
  • Godfire: Rise of the Prometheus and more.

Agony looks like a very promising game, and will release in 2017 for the Xbox One, PC, and Playstation 4.

What do you think of Agony? Are you interested in the game? Let us know in the comments below!

Microsoft bans advertising agencies from creating Minecraft mod for promotions

Minecraft Brands (Small)Mojang today announced that they are updating their Commercial Usage Guidelines that is related to promotions within Minecraft. According to their new change, advertising agencies and corporations are not allowed to build Minecraft mod or server to advertise unrelated products or for organizations to promote their causes.

If you are an ad agency, corporation, non-profit, or politician, you can't do these kinds of things or hire someone to do them:

  • Build a Minecraft mod or server that promotes unrelated products in playable form; e.g., if you are a restaurant chain, you can't market your restaurant by releasing a mod that includes your restaurant built out of Minecraft blocks.
  • Build a Minecraft map or mod that markets a movie or TV show; e.g., if you're a movie studio, you can't make a map that uses Minecraft blocks to build out the fictional world of the movie or its characters, and you can't make an official movie trailer out of gameplay footage from that map or mod.
  • It's worth mentioning that fans of a particular restaurant, movie, or some other thing are still free to build things in Minecraft that represent or celebrate it so long as the goal or focus is not to promote or sell that stuff. The new rules only apply to companies or organisations that are using Minecraft to sell their products or promote their causes.

You can read the new rules in details in the section of the Guidelines called Building Promotions with Minecraft.

Samsung begins mass production of 512-Gigabyte NVMe SSD

BGA_SSD_Main_2_2

Samsung today announced that it has begun mass producing the NVMe PCIe solid state drive (SSD) in a single ball grid array (BGA) package. This new SSD is 20mm x 16mm x 1.5mm and weighs only about one gram. The single-package SSD's volume is approximately a hundredth of a 2.5" SSD or HDD, and its surface area is about a fifth of an M.2 SSD. This new SSD will allow much more design flexibility for computing device manufacturers for use in their next-generation PCs and ultra-slim notebook PCs.

Configuring the PM971-NVMe SSD in a single BGA package was enabled by combining 16 of Samsung's 48-layer 256-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND flash chips, one 20-nanometer 4Gb LPDDR4 mobile DRAM chip and a high-performance Samsung controller.

In addition, the PM971-NVMe SSD delivers a level of performance that easily surpasses the speed limit of a SATA 6Gb/s interface. It enables sequential read and write speeds of up to 1,500MB/s (megabytes per second) and 900MB/s respectively, when TurboWrite technology is used. The performance figures can be directly compared to transferring a 5GB-equivalent, Full-HD movie in about 3 seconds or downloading it in about 6 seconds. It also boasts random read and write IOPS (input output operations per second) of up to 190K and 150K respectively, to easily handle high-speed operations. A hard drive, by contrast, will only process up to 120 IOPS in random reads, making the new Samsung SSD more than 1500 times faster than an HDD in this regard.

The new PM971-NVMe SSD line-up will be available in 512GB, 256GB and 128GB storage options to OEMs starting this month worldwide.

Four gaming companies claim to be working on VR for the Xbox One

e3

E3 is happening in 2 weeks, and there are rumours that Microsoft is working on a more powerful XBox One code-named Scorpio in partnership with Oculus Rift that will be VR capable.

Now 4 gaming companies with exhibitions at E3 there have indicated that they are working on VR for the Xbox One alongside VR for the Playstation 4.

e3_screenshot

The 4 companies who have ticked that box include Rebellion, Maximum Games, Readily Information Company and 3DRudder.

Rebellion developed Battlezone VR for PlayStation VR, while 3D Rudder produces a feet-based virtual reality controller . Maximum Games is working on a VR game called Loading Human: Chapter 1 for the Oculus Rift and Playstation 4,  while Readily specializes in generating 3D characters and scenery.

The news was uncovered by a member of the Neogaf gaming website here. and leaked via E3's visit planning site, and I am sure these booths will get particular attention from Xbox One fans soon.

It is not clear if Microsoft will announce the new Xbox at E3, with the potential being there for putting a damper on their current sales as people wait for the new device, rumoured for a 2017 release date. Microsoft is also rumoured to be announcing a new slimmer Xbox One and also an Xbox streaming solution. Microsoft announces its own corporate venture group to invest in startups

Microsoft venture logo

Microsoft today announced their new corporate venture arm which will invest in tech startups in North America and Israel. This new group will be called Microsoft Ventures.

The Microsoft Ventures name was assumed from an existing team within Microsoft's own Developer Evangelism team. That team has now been rebranded to Microsoft Accelerator. Microsoft Ventures will focus on start-up investments while Microsoft Accelerator will focus on start-up enablement, primarily through our seven accelerators around the world.

Nagraj Kashyap, former SVP of Qualcomm Ventures who joined Microsoft earlier this year is leading this effort. Microsoft Ventures will offer financial, technical and GTM resources to startups. For now, Microsoft will be looking to invest in startups based out of SF/Bay area, Seattle, New York City and Tel Aviv and with the goal of expanding to other geographies in the coming years.

What kind of startups Microsoft will invest in?

Given that the move to the cloud remains the single largest priority for the industry, identifying the bleeding-edge companies who complement and leverage the transition to the cloud is key to our investment thesis. Companies developing product and services that complement Azure infrastructure, building new business SaaS applications, promoting more personal computing by enriching the Windows and HoloLens ecosystems, new disruptive enterprise, consumer productivity, and communication products around Office 365 are interesting areas from an investment perspective.

In addition, and on a more horizontal axis, you should expect to see us invest in companies who are doing work in the areas for machine learning and security.

Microsoft has also mentioned in their blog post that they are not aiming to hit a specific number of investments annually, but we can expect steady activity over the course of the year.

Windows 10 overtakes Windows 7 in USA

CjwuLg9VEAEYcHH

Windows 10 may still only be a fraction of the desktop operating systems used worldwide, but in some markets it is now the dominant operating system.

According to Statcounter (as tweeted,by David Storey, Edge developer at Microsoft) Windows 10 for the first time overtook Windows 7 in USA on the 29th May, joining Western Europe, Australia and some other smaller markets where this is the case.

According to web tracking company Windows 10 now holds 28.82 of the desktop browsing market, vs 28.65 for Windows 7, with OSX a distant third at 16.16%. Worldwide it sits at 16% vs 40% for Windows 7.CjwuLMEUUAULY2K

With the free update to Windows 10 expiring soon we may soon see an acceleration of the trend, to be followed presumably by the slower PC replacement cycle edging towards Microsoft's 1 billion target.

The news underlines in some ways that Windows 10 does not have to be the dominant OS all over the world if it can succeed in the richer markets such as USA and Western Europe, where users are more likely to buy into concepts such as the app store on their PC, and can convince the dominant western development houses to invest in the platform.

Developer Submission: Travel Currencies Converter UWP app

When traveling I frequently need to compare exchange rates and compare prices quoted in different currencies. A common scenario is one hotel quoting their room rates in Euros, one in Dollars and another one in the local currency Baht. My Travel Currencies UWP app shows multiple conversions at once. You can pin small, wide and large Live Tiles to your start screen and even display conversions on your Microsoft Band:

Travel Currencies automatically fetches current rates in the background. So when you step out of a plane or don't have a local SIM card yet you at least have rates as of your last internet connection instead of staring at the progress spinner of an app hopelessly trying to connect. To see the actual exchange fee charged you can select commission % (e.g. -5% for typical kiosk rate or a 3.5% custom commission). For your convenience the app shows a cheat sheet with values for typical denominations (e.g. 10,000 Baht = 251.36 €). To get the best exchange rates for your money Travel Currencies offers the following features.

  • See multiple currency conversions at once.
  • Live Tiles (small, wide, large).
  • Interactive MS Band Tile.
