This build's full tag is rs2_release_xbox_1704.170328-2321, and you can see the changelog below.

Ryse: Son of Rome and Darksiders are now free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers

Ryse: Son of Rome and Darksiders are both available a little early this time around for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. A few days ago, the Xbox Live Gold titles leaked in a rather unorthodox way as Xbox Austria posted the image a few hours early. Since then there has been a lot of hype for the games, especially Ryse: Son of Rome and Assassin's Creed Revelations.

Ryse: Son of Rome revolves around a betrayed solider who seeks revenge against the leaders who wronged him. The game features the best graphics of any title on Xbox One and was a technical showcase when it launched with the console. Surprisingly, it remains the best-looking game till this day. Gamers thought that Quantum Break would dethrone Ryse: Son of Rome but it didn't happen.

Darksiders is a hack-and-slash title which puts you in the shoes of one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. You're blamed for ending the world and have to uncover a divine conspiracy and the real culprit. The game is somewhat similar to God of War in some ways, especially its gameplay mechanics. Both of these experiences are stellar so if you don't own them and have Xbox Live Gold, download them for free right now!

Phil Spencer shares 1080p screenshot of Phantom Dust for Xbox One

Phil Spencer shared a 1080p screenshot of the upcoming Phantom Dust port for Xbox One. Many suspected the game wouldn't received noticeable upgrades but it's definitely running at a high resolution on the console. While exact details are unknown, it's confirmed that the game isn't 480p on Xbox One or it would look like a blurry mess in the 1080p screenshot. It's great that we can finally put those fallacious rumors to rest.

CD Projekt is working on another role-playing game apart from Cyberpunk 2077

A few days ago we reported that The Witcher series passed the 25 million sales mark at the end of 2016. Well, CD Projekt aren't done with the surprises. In their modified strategy page, they're now listing another major role-playing game which will release between 2017 and 2021. The project is separate from Cyberpunk 2077 and Gwent as the company is supposedly already hiring concept artists to bring their latest vision to life.

We have no details about the project but we should expect the same quality as their previous role-playing games. The earnings call hinted that the game would be very different from their current titles, including Cyberpunk 2077, so I can't even begin to fathom what it might be. Maybe a game along the lines of Watch Dogs 2 set in present day? Who knows? Whatever it is, this is definitely an exciting time to be a CD Project fan.

OneNote for Windows 10 gets audio nodes and more for Insiders

Microsoft is rolling out a new update for OneNote on Windows 10. The company is releasing a new update for the OneNote app to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring. The update is not huge, but it introduces two really important features. Firstly, it brings support for audio notes to the OneNote app which means you can now add voice recordings to any of your notes on OneNote. The update also brings the ability to paste images from your clipboard into notes, which was a much-needed addition.

Here's the full changelog:

  • Audio Notes: Record a meeting or lecture and keep the recording as part of your notes.
  • Easier insertion of files and pictures: Quickly insert files and pictures by dragging or pasting them into your notes.
  • Capture your screen: Use the Win+Shift+S keyboard shortcut to capture a region of your screen and then paste it into OneNote or any other app as an image. (Requires the Windows 10 Creators Update.)
  • Drag and drop: Keep everything organized with a quick drag and drop of pages or sections into different sections or notebooks.

The update for OneNote is only available to Insiders in the Fast Ring at the moment, you can get it from the link below.

[Rumor] Project Scorpio leak possibly reveals upcoming optimizations and launch titles

Windows Central revealed quite a few details about Project Scorpio today. According to the outlet, the information was extracted from marketing materials and confirmed by their source. As with any such leak, take it with a grain of salt until Microsoft officially makes an announcement. Everything from the status of the development tools to expected games was allegedly discussed in the marketing packet.

Currently Project Scorpio's development kits don't allow it to operate at peak performance. However, that is quickly about to change in the coming weeks. Microsoft is supposedly planning a massive update in June which unlocks all 6 teraflops. This should help developers hit native 4K resolution and steady frame rates.

Developers have a variety of ways they can submit their games for Project Scorpio. Many titles like Halo 5 utilize dynamic scaling so a simple update should allow such games to look and run better on the upcoming console. Other games may include patches with 4K assets or issue specific updates which only target the device. It's up to the developers to decide which path they want to pursue.

Lastly, many first-party and third-party games will support Project Scorpio. The major games which will supposedly support increased frame rate or resolution are as follows:

  • Call of Duty 2017
  • Crackdown 3
  • FIFA 18
  • Forza Motorsport 7
  • Madden NFL 18
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Star Wars: Battlefront 2
  • State of Decay 2

These games should be showcased at E3 2017 on Project Scorpio or at least receive gameplay footage from the console. All of these games should feature 4K resolution if the leaked material is to be believed. Hopefully we'll know more about the console and supported titles in the coming weeks.

New Xbox One build for Beta Insiders adds social features

There's a new Xbox One build rolling out to Beta ring Insiders tonight which adds new social features. While we don't know what the social features are at the moment, we do know they're coming. Xbox's Brad Rossetti shared this news on Twitter a few minutes ago. The social features will be from the list promised a few weeks ago.

The social features will probably include the ability to join tournaments or changes to clubs and Looking for Group (LFG). The abilities which may be added are as follows:

  • When you create an LFG post, as the owner you will be able to see new vetting cards that include hero stats from gamers interested in joining your party.
  • You will be able to search LFG posts from the Achievements tab, related to the Achievement you're trying to finish.
  • They're adding the number of open LFG posts to the Game Hub and Club Hub headers.
  • Have you made a successful LFG post that you want to create again? Now you can see previous LFG posts that you have created, participated or shown interest in, and can copy them to create new posts.
  • When creating an LFG post, see all the recent tags you've used and easily select them.
  • Club owners can upload custom images for their Club logo and Club background.
  • Club owners and admins will be identified and labeled in their text posts to better help them stand out and manage their community.
  • Club owners and admins can pin a post at the top of their Club feed.

Microsoft will share official patch notes soon so we should exactly what's included. Hopefully they'll add a detailed breakdown of the new features rather than a sentence that says "more social features were added" like in the past.

Titanfall 2 is free to play on the Xbox One this weekend

If you're an Xbox Live Gold member, you're in luck: you'll have both WWE 2K17 and Titanfall 2 to play this weekend, even if you don't own them. In Titanfall's case, you'll be able to play all of multiplayer, the training gauntlet, and the sixth mission in the singleplayer campaign: The Beacon.

Titanfall 2 is a pretty fantastic followup to the original game, and it's worth trying at the very least. It boasts an impressive singleplayer campaign that mixes parkour with both giant robots and enjoyable gunplay, as well as even more varied multiplayer modes than the original game. Multiplayer also features far more customization than the first game, letting you earn all sorts of new skins and designs for both your pilot and your titan, giving you even more reason to keep on coming back for more and more.

Despite all of that, Titanfall 2 didn't sell particularly well, likely due to launching too close to Battlefield 1. The price of the game has been falling regularly because of that, with prices going as low as $24.99. The Xbox One free weekend comes alongside a digital price drop on the game, bringing it to $30 if you buy it from the Xbox Store. The Deluxe Edition is just a mere $10 more, coming in at $40. You can get slightly lower prices if you purchase it physically through Amazon, with Standard and Deluxe being $24.99 and $31.99 respectively.

Will you be playing Titanfall 2 during its free weekend? Let us know in the comments below!

Microsoft is shutting down CodePlex, its open source project hosting web site

Microsoft today announced that they are shutting down CodePlex. CodePlex is Microsoft's free open source project hosting site where developers were able to create projects to collaborate with others on their projects and download open source software. Microsoft launched CorePlex 11 years back when there was very few open source project hosting sites. GitHub came to the market a few years later, but it has now become the de facto place for open source project sharing and most open source projects have migrated there. Even Microsoft is now using GitHub and several of its open source projects are now on GitHub (Visual Studio Code, TypeScript, .NET, the Cognitive Toolkit, and more).

Microsoft has already disabled the ability to create new CodePlex projects from today.  In October, they will set CodePlex to read-only, before shutting it down completely on December 15th, 2017. Microsoft is also helping developers to migrate their data from CodePlex to GitHub. There is a streamlined import experience to bring your CodePlex source code, license, and documentation to GitHub. Also, Microsoft will be providing CodePlex Archive that will allow developers to download an archive file with their CodePlex source code, releases, documentation, issues, and license, all in common formats like Markdown and JSON.

Learn more about this announcement here.

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse’s remake returns to the Xbox Store after delisting

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse originally released in 1990 and was heralded as one of the best platformers of its time. It made the genre popular and featured perfected mechanics. Over the years the title has become a cult classic and Disney released a remake in 2013 for Xbox 360. While the remake didn't receive the critical acclaim of the original, gamers still loved it because it was the return of one of the best games of all time. As in the 1990 original, the game casts players in the role of Mickey Mouse who must fight his way through the Castle of Illusion to rescue Minnie Mouse from the evil witch Mizrabel who wants to steal her beauty.

Last year Disney announced that Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse's remake would be delisted from the Xbox Store because "the current publishing arrangement is coming to an end on September 2." While existing owners could continue to access the game, no new sales were permitted. That changed today as Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse reappeared on the marketplace. We were able to purchase the game and can verify that it's available.

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse is also backward compatible so those interested should download it right now! You can play it on your Xbox One so there's an added benefit. The game costs $15 at the moment but it may go on sale in the future. Sega holds sales on the Xbox Store all the time so the likelihood of it is quite high. The game may not be as groundbreaking as the original but it's still a lot of fun and should evoke nostalgia in many.

Destiny 2 requires at least 68 GB of space at launch

It appears that Destiny 2 will be a much more expansive experience even at launch according to information provided by Bungie about the space requirements. FPSPoint+ managed to get their hands on the disclaimers about the beta and the full game. Bungie details the space requirements by saying "Minimum 68 GB available hard drive storage space required as of September 2017. Storage requirements to increase." Considering that games like Halo 5: Guardians now stand at almost 100 GB, these figures aren't surprising at all.

Destiny 2 is expected to support Project Scorpio so this may be the reason why the file size is 68 GB at launch. The game is also coming out on PC so it should already have 4K assets. Hopefully Bungie or Microsoft will make a formal announcement about Project Scorpio and Destiny 2 during the console's reveal. Aaron Greenberg casually hinted that the game would look stunning on Project Scorpio on Twitter but didn't clarify if this was his wish or confirmation.

You should note that Destiny 2 will increase in size after release. The original game started at around 20 GB on Xbox One but now stands at around 50 GB. It's safe to assume that this trend will continue as Destiny 2 receives its expansions and other events. Hopefully the content will be more engaging in terms of storytelling this time around and the loot system fair. The game launches on September 8 so we'll find out in a few months.

Microsoft has updated the Maps platform for the Windows 10 Creators Update

With the Windows 10 Creators Update, Microsoft is updating their Maps platform with a new look to make it consistent between web and UWP apps. They have updated the 3D engine and added new offline capabilities, routing and others. Microsoft today announced the availability of  new set of Map Styling APIs for Windows 10 Map Control. These new styling APIs will enable developers to customize the look and feel of the map canvas on the fly inside their apps. These new customization features are supported for all regions except for China, Japan and South Korea. Since vector mode supports offline storage for all layers, the maps customization feature is available for both online and offline modes. Microsoft is supporting the following Map Styles:

  • Spooky Map: The Spooky road map style is rendered by Windows 10 Map Control through changing the land color, the color for the neighborhood labels and the fill color for areas such as airports, cemeteries and education structures.
  • Winter Map: The Winter road map style is rendered by Windows 10 Map Control through changing the land color, the color for neighborhood labels and the fill color for the areas such as cemeteries, education structures and military bases.
  • Gray Map: The Gray road map style is rendered by Windows 10 Map Control through changing the land and water color, the color for all labels and the fill color for all areas and map elements such as roads, railways, runways, transportation network lines and structures.

In addition to styling, Microsoft is also releasing improved 3D Maps engine. Today they are announcing a new MapElement called MapBillboard which can be used to display images or signage on the 3D map. MapBillboard displays an Image at a specific location on the map. It acts as if it was part of the 3D scene: the image scales with the rest of the 3D scene as the camera zooms and pans.

WhartonBrooks attempt to raise $1.1 million from Windows Phone fans with rebranded Coship Windows Phone

WhartonBrooks has finally announced revealed their first Windows 10 Mobile device and it is named 'Cerulean Moment'.

The final official pictures reveal the device is a lightly rebranded Coship handset, which is a respectable mid-range device with USB-C and Continuum for Phones support which was selling for $399 in mid-2016,

The Cerulean Moment is now selling for a much more affordable $290 a pop.  It comes with 5-inch 720P HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor, 3GB RAM/32GB storage, 13MP/5MP rear/front cameras and 2250 mAh battery. It also comes with support for LTE and Dual SIM/Expandable storage slot. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

The 720P screen is still somewhat disappointing for a 2017 Windows Phone however.

The company appears to be making a play for the "committed windows phone fan", of which they say they need only 3900.  Previous history suggests crowd-funded windows phones tend to fail well before reaching this number, but at leat the $1.1 million funding is fixed, meaning WhartonBrooks  will only receive the money of they actually reach the goal.

If you are interested in the device, you can order it on Indiegogo by backing them for $290.

The first cumulative update for Windows 10 Creators Update rolls out to Windows insiders

If you're a PC Windows Insider in any ring, you'll have a new update waiting for you: 15063.11. This is also known as KB4016250, and contains two very basic fixes aimed at both McAfee Enterprise and Surface users. You can find the changelog below.

  • We fixed an issue where on Surface devices, Bluetooth radio fails to re-enumerate during hibernate/resume.
  • We fixed an issue with McAfee Enterprise to prevent a system crash when the product driver is installed on build 15060 configured with Device Guard.

This comes after the news on Wednesday that the Creators Update would come out for PCs on April 11th, but you'll be able to get it through the Upgrade Assistant on April 5th if you can't wait. Of course, joining the Windows Insider Program to get it now is always an option – it's the final build, and there's only some minor issues left to fix up before the official release.

PC sensation Cities: Skylines is coming to Xbox One on April 21

Cities: Skylines is an amazing city-creation experience along the lines of Sim City and other building games. The title garnered tremendous critical acclaim on PC when it released a few years ago and since then has received many updates to make it into an even better game. Beforehand, console gamers were out of luck when it came to playing this title but then the developers announced the Xbox One version. We've all been patiently waiting for this game since then and today we got a release date. Cities: Skylines is coming to Xbox One on April 21!

Cities: Skylines is a successor to the original developer's Cities in Motion games which revolve around transportation systems. Think of them as Industry Giant but they focus on everything related to vehicles. The story gets interesting from there though. The developers felt they had the technical prowess to make a full city simulation game but their publisher, Paradox Interactive, held off on the idea because of SimCity. SimCity 2013 was coming out around that time and the publisher felt it would crush a game like Cities: Skylines. Luckily for them, the reboot of SimCity was a critical failure and generated a lot of resentment towards the franchise due to its always-online requirements and other poor systems.

Taking advantage of EA's misstep, Paradox Interactive signed off on the project and in 2015 it was welcomed to open arms. People thought this was a return to form for city-building games after the SimCity debacle. Due to the continued popularity of the game, the publisher decided to bring it to Xbox One. Hopefully the Xbox One port will be amazing just like the original experience.

Microsoft announces the public preview of Microsoft Graph reporting APIs

Office 365 admins are now able to get insights about their Office 365 deployments through usage reports in the Office 365 admin center. Microsoft's new Graph reporting APIs enable customers to programmatically access the same Office 365 usage data available within the usage reports. These new APIs will allow admins to incorporate the Office 365 activity data into their existing reporting solutions. Data that can be retrieved includes organization level summaries per service, as well as entity level (user, sites, accounts) detail usage information for different reporting periods of the last 7/30/90/180 days, and daily activity aggregates. Microsoft today also announced that they are deprecating the following APIs:

ConnectionbyClientType, ConnectionbyClientTypeDetail, CsActiveUser, CsAVConferenceTime, CsP2PAVTime, CsConference, CsP2PSession, GroupActivity, MailboxActivity, GroupActivity, MailboxUsage, MailboxUsageDetail, StaleMailbox and StaleMailboxDetail. We will remove these APIs on October 1, 2017.

Microsoft is also making it easier for admins to move their domain management to Microsoft. After adding a custom domain to Office 365, admins can now verify that they are the owner of the respective domain by simply adding one TXT record to their name server DNS. Microsoft will then set up the online services and manage DNS records on your behalf.

Apart from the above, there are several other improvements. Learn about them here.

UK Department for Education is deploying Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 for its 5,000 employees

Yesterday, we reported that UK Prime Minister Theresa May recently visited Microsoft's UK headquarters. Today, UK's Department for Education (DfE) has announced that they are deploying Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 devices for its its 5,000 employees. Adrian Tucker, Chief Technology Officer at the DfE said that they chose Surface devices as they could offer employees the ability to work from anywhere and enable the department to maximise the space available.

"We have seen significant technology modernisation over the past 18 months, and the Surface devices have been a big part of that," said Adrian Tucker, Chief Technology Officer at the DfE. "The Surface Book has been a core part of our mobility and productivity; it's allowed us to use a device that's secure in a mobile way. We have also upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and we are able to collaborate, share documents and use the cloud. We haven't had these benefits before, and now we want to exploit the technology."

DfE has been trialling the Surface Pro 3 devices and they felt it as the right device because of the annotation and collaboration capabilities. Now, they have taken the decision to roll out the Surface Pro 4 as it became available.

"It really is significant to see government departments such as the DfE make bold IT decisions for the future. By deploying Surface devices, organisations like DfE can drive substantial efficiencies and boost employee productivity. In a traditional 'pen and paper' industry, it's refreshing to see such a large-scale transformational push towards paperless working, with colleagues collaborating in an intuitive and secure manner, whether in the office or in the field," said Ryan Asdourian, Windows and Surface Lead at Microsoft UK.

Cult classic Outcast is getting remastered for Xbox One and PC

Appeal Studios and Bigben Interactive unveiled the first trailer for Outcast: Second Contact today. While the younger generation may have heard of Game of Thrones or Mario, many probably don't know about Outcast. Outcast is a legendary game which released in 1999. It's regarded as the first 3D open world in the history of video games and a true pioneer in the action-adventure genre. It garnered tremendous critical acclaim when it came out all those years ago and has been revamped a few times since then through sequels and poor upgrades. Outcast: Second Contact aims to recreate the magic of the original for the next-generation of consoles. The game is scheduled to release this fall on Xbox One and PC.

Outcast: Second Contact revolves around the journey to an alien world. In the near future, humanity has discovered it is not alone in the universe, or rather universes. Alas, the first contact with intelligent beings turns disastrous when a probe sent by the United States government is destroyed by the natives of a world called Adelpha. The incident creates an energy cataclysm which threatens to destroy Earth. You are Cutter Slade, a former elite soldier sent on a mission to Adelpha to prevent this catastrophe. However, instead of quickly resolving the issue, you get caught up in liberating an enslaved group in this uncharted realm.

The debut trailer gives a quick overview into the wild landscapes of the planet Adelpha, a bewitching world as beautiful as it is dangerous, and the cradle of an advanced alien civilization. All of your choices have consequences on the balance of the world. Welcomed by natives as the Ulukai, a messiah of an ancient prophecy, you confront the formidable soldiers of a bloodthirsty tyrant by using a devastating arsenal of evolving weapons. To save Earth, you must save Adelpha as the destiny of both worlds is in your hands!

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey leaves Facebook after only three years

Founder of Oculus VR and Designer of the Oculus Rift headset, Palmer Luckey, has officially left Facebook, after being purchased by the social network giant for $2 billion in 2014, after only 3 years with the company. Facebook rocked the nation, or rather the world when it purchased Oculus back then, with co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg believing that virtual reality would be the next big computing platform after mobile, even before Oculus launched it's first VR headset, the Oculus Rift.

His departure comes only two months after a trial in federal court over allegations that he and several of his colleagues had stolen trade secrets from video game publisher ZeniMax Media, to create the Oculus technology. The Judge ruled that Oculus had developed some of its code while John Carmack (one of the developers working with Oculus) was still employed by ZeniMax Media, using the publisher's technology, and found them liable for $500 million in damages, of which Luckey himself was responsible for $50 million. This itself following outlash against the founder when he was found to be funding a group, called Nimble America, a pro-Trump political organization that promoted distasteful memes and slogans against then competitor Hillary Clinton on social media sites like Reddit, Twitter and Facebook.

Though no specifics were given for his leaving the company, Facebook has confirmed Luckey's departure, saying in a quote:

Palmer will be dearly missed. Palmer's legacy extends far beyond Oculus. His inventive spirit helped kickstart the modern VR revolution and build an industry. We're thankful for everything he did for Oculus and VR, and we wish him all the best.

Palmer Luckey has not responded to Facebook messages requesting answers about his departure.

Windows 10 Creators Update comes to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview ring

Microsoft is today bringing the Windows 10 Creators Update to the Windows Insider program's Release Preview ring. The company is less than two weeks away from the official rollout of the Creators Update, and it isn't surprising to see the Creators Update landing on the Release Preview ring at this moment. In fact, Microsoft will allow users to manually upgrade to the Creators Update on April 5 — that's next Wednesday, so we are only a few days away before the official rollout begins.

For those wondering, Microsoft is releasing build 15063 of the Creators Update to Insiders in the Release Preview ring who were only able to test cumulative updates for build 14393 (aka the Anniversary Update) for the past several months.

Earlier this morning Microsoft also released the official ISOs for build 15063, which Windows Insiders can use to perform a clean install on their Windows 10 PCs. As we reported earlier, build 15063 is indeed the RTM build — which means this is the build users will start receiving on their PCs once Microsoft starts the rollout of the Creators Update on April 11.

The Creators Update for Windows 10 brings a slew of new features, ranging from a couple of "creativity" features to even some features for gamers. The update isn't significant for Windows 10 but it is a substantial step in the right direction for the OS. We will have a deeper look in the Creators Update next week, so keep an eye out for that on MSPU!

Volkswagen’s Virtual Engineering Lab using Microsoft’s HoloLens to design their future cars

Microsoft's HoloLens has found a home with German automaker Volkswagen's Virtual Engineering Labs to help create their next generation of cars.

Using the 3D mixed reality PC they manipulate a scale model of a car, change wheels, paint colours, body shape and more all using simple gestures or voice commands.

According to computer engineer Frank Ostermann the technology has already been deployed at six labs operated by Volkswagen Group IT, with plans to move from simple cosmetic work to deeper engineering work on the vehicles.

"At Volkswagen, we have been using augmented reality and virtual reality for some time, mainly to obtain a three-dimensional view," Ostermann said. "We are now taking a major step forward at the Virtual Engineering Lab."We are transforming this technology into a tool for Technical Development."

"We are cooperating very closely with our colleagues from Technical Development and are already close to the first new vehicle concepts and design studies," Ostermann continued.

The technology allows changes to be made more efficiently and several teams in differed countries to work together seamlessly.

"The teams can directly follow and compare minimal changes to the model and then make a decision. This means that they can reach their goal faster," Ostermann said.

"Just a few years ago, this was all science fiction. "Now it is clear that this is how we will be developing our next models."

Over 13 million people watched the Halo World Championship 2017 Finals

Despite the dominance of Call of Duty, Halo is still one of the most popular games around. It's even more popular in the eSports community due to the marketing push from Microsoft. The Witcher franchise sold over 25 million copies before the end of 2016

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a breathtaking experience which has garnered tremendous critical claim since it launched all those months ago. The game currently sits above 90 on Metacritic for all platforms and is quite the sensation. In a recent press release disclosing their earnings, CD Projekt reported that the franchise sold over 25 million units before the end of 2016. President Adam Kici?ski said:

"For years we have consistently prioritized quality and focused on a limited range of products. The persistently strong sales of the entire The Witcher series vindicate our approach and contribute to long-term appeal of our releases. Between the launch of The Witcher in 2007 and the end of 2016 we have sold over 25 million copies of The Witcher games."

While this approach is risky because it doesn't involve a continuous supply of significant revenue, it has worked for studios like Rockstar who focus on one game for years. Grand Theft Auto V is a great example of this. Hopefully Cyberpunk 2077 will release soon so we're treated to another amazing experience from these talented developers. If they can keep up the quality and immersion, they have nothing to fear.

Twitter will not count @usernames toward your Tweet’s 140 characters from now on

Following the feedback from its users, Twitter today finally announced that they will not be counting @usernames toward your Tweet's 140 characters. So next time when you reply for a Twitter conversation involving several people, you don't have to worry about compressing your thoughts to fit into Twitter's 140 characters limit. They are also making few changes to simplify Twitter conversations:

  • Who you are replying to will appear above the Tweet text rather than within the Tweet text itself, so you have more characters to have conversations.
  • You can tap on "Replying to…" to easily see and control who's part of your conversation.
  • When reading a conversation, you'll actually see what people are saying, rather than seeing lots of @usernames at the start of a Tweet.

With these changes, Twitter believes that you can focus more on what a discussion is about, and who is having it. You can learn more about how replies work here.

Oculus’ former CMO joins Microsoft as Redmond gets ready to step up its marketing game for the HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality

Microsoft is getting ready for a big marketing push for the HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality. To celebrate the first birthday of the HoloLens, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi (the CVP of Microsoft's Windows and Devices group) sent an email internally at Microsoft summarizing the company's efforts towards marketing the HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality for consumers — calling it a "critical area" for the company.

In the internal email, Mehdi announced that Elizabeth Harmen (aka Lizz Harmen), the former Chief Marketing Officer of Facebook's Oculus is joining Redmond. At Microsoft, Harmen will be the Corporate Vice President of the software giant's new marketing team dedicated for Mixed Reality — simply called the Mixed Reality Marketing Team. Harmen will be reporting directly to Mehdi as the CVP of the new marketing team.

Mehdi stated:

"As CVP of Mixed Reality Marketing, Liz will be responsible for driving the global business and marketing strategy, working closely with our internal partners in engineering, Windows product marketing, integrated marketing, the MCB and Commercial teams, and external partners around the world. We have big, bold goals for mixed reality and the impact it can have on our overall Windows and Devices Group ambition to create more personal computing."

Yusuf Mehdi also outlined how the company is planning on accelerating HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality's market presence during the holiday season in the internal email:

"We are going to ramp up our sales efforts by investing in a dedicated set of sellers and TSPs for FY18. Combined with the significant marketing investment we are making for this coming holiday with mixed reality headsets marketed on Windows 10 PCs by the Windows 10 marketing team, we are set up to have an acceleration of our mixed reality initiative."

Microsoft pushing Windows Mixed Reality and HoloLens isn't surprising to see — one of the biggest new features in the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update is the new Mixed Reality portal which works with the company's upcoming mixed reality headsets. The new marketing team will likely work on promoting the new headsets along with some of the upcoming Windows 10 PCs, but the HoloLens-related promotions should be much more interesting as Build 2017 is just around the corner where the company is going to reveal more on the HoloLens.

Here is the full email, courtesy of The Verge:

Team,

One of the biggest bets Microsoft is making for the future of computing is the development of a new world of mixed reality, led in large part by our pioneering work on Microsoft HoloLens. We have been on this journey from the unveil of HoloLens back in January 2015, to the announcement from our OEM partners of the first headsets capable of mixed reality last October, to the release of the first Windows 10 Mixed Reality dev kits this month. As we gear up for this coming holiday, we enter a new phase of bringing mixed reality to everyone.

To match the industry-defining technical work of our engineering team and to build on the broader work to establish the category of Mixed Reality, I am excited today to announce some changes within our team to enable us to accelerate our market presence.

1) Acknowledging the growing importance of this category, I am creating a dedicated Mixed Reality Marketing Team, separating it from the Surface devices team, and taking it as a direct report.

2) With support from Chris and Satya, we created a CVP level role to head this effort. I am thrilled to announce that after a thorough search, we have found an ideal leader in Elizabeth Hamren, the former CMO of Oculus VR at Facebook. Liz will be joined by Jeff Hansen, Sandhya Thodla and their teams, who have been doing great work driving our progress to date.

3) We are going to ramp up our sales efforts by investing in a dedicated set of sellers and TSPs for FY18. Combined with the significant marketing investment we are making for this coming holiday with mixed reality headsets marketed on Windows 10 PCs by the Windows 10 marketing team, we are set up to have an acceleration of our mixed reality initiative.

As CVP of Mixed Reality Marketing, Liz will be responsible for driving the global business and marketing strategy, working closely with our internal partners in engineering, Windows product marketing, integrated marketing, the MCB and Commercial teams, and external partners around the world. We have big, bold goals for mixed reality and the impact it can have on our overall Windows and Devices Group ambition to create more personal computing.

Liz is an industry veteran with extensive experience in product marketing, management, and development across a range of devices, spanning over 20 years. Prior to her role as CMO of Oculus VR, Liz served as the Vice President of Marketing at Dropcam, a cloud-based Wi-Fi video monitoring service, acquired by Nest Labs. She oversaw all aspects of marketing, including brand and advertising, product marketing, channel marketing, public relations and social media, as well as web and subscription sales. Liz has also served as Vice President of Marketing at Plantronics and Vice President of Marketing at Jawbone. Previous leadership positions have included posts at OQO, Mayfield Fund and Microsoft (which she left in 2002). She also served as a Director of Cozi Group, Inc. Liz has a BSE in Civil Engineering and Operations Research from Princeton University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

I am looking forward to learning from Liz and adding her extensive industry experience to our WDG Marketing Leadership Team. It's an exciting time as we push forward in this critical area for the company. Liz officially joins Microsoft today, just in time to join the Exec Retreat, and she will join the team in the office soon. Please welcome Liz to the team.

Windows Store now has over 150 ‘exclusive’ mixed reality apps as Microsoft celebrates the 1st birthday of HoloLens

It's been a year since Microsoft launched the HoloLens in the United States. The company brought the HoloLens to more countries and introduce new features for the HoloLens over the past several months. Today, Microsoft is celebrating the first birthday of the HoloLens, highlighting some of the most remarkable achievements from the past year.

According to Microsoft, the Windows Store now includes more than 150 "exclusive" mixed reality apps. This is actually pretty impressive to see as we never really expected developers to build so many apps that run exclusively on the HoloLens. Microsoft has also featured some of the best mixed-reality apps that are available on the Windows Store, including HoloGuide (an app that helps you safely navigate in an environment with low-visibility using the device's spatial sound and environmental awareness capabilities), HoloHear (a speech-to-sign-language interpreter that works in real-time and Teomirn (an app that lets you learn pano).

Here are the other highlights:

  • Over 150 exclusive mixed reality apps are now available in the Windows Store.
  • HoloLens is available in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan, France, Germany, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the United States and we will begin to ship in China before summer.
  • We have expanded the promise of mixed reality by making it attainable for everyone. Windows Mixed Reality, the HoloLens software platform, is built into Windows 10, opening an ecosystem of hardware and software that will revolutionize how we interact with people, places and things.

HoloLens' creator, Alex Kipman stated in a blog post that Microsoft will have more on the HoloLens at its Build 2017 conference in May, so that should be quite exciting.

Microsoft will close its Skype office in Sweden

Microsoft last year announced its decision to close Skype's office in London which resulted in 220 job losses. Today, they announced that they are doing the same in Stockholm, Sweden. Skype office in Sweden employs around 120 people and all of their jobs are at risk. Skype spokesperson confirmed the news with the following message.

"Microsoft has made the difficult decision to start consultations with the trade unions to close the Skype office in Stockholm, potentially putting at risk all 120 employees."

"This proposal is consistent with our long-term aim to reduce our geographical footprint and co-locate teams to enable better collaboration, improved engineering efficiencies and increase the pace of innovation and quality. We are deeply committed to doing everything we can to help all those impacted through this process," said Skype spokesperson. Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion in cash from the investor group led by Silver Lake six years ago. I'm surprised to know that their streamlining process it still going on. Hopefully, these consolidation efforts will result in better Skype experiences for consumers.

Far Cry 3 is joining backward compatibility today

Xbox One backward compatibility hasn't see the release of a major game in awhile but today Microsoft announced that Far Cry 3 would be joining the program. Far Cry 3 is an open world first-person shooter set on an island unlike any other. A place where heavily armed warlords traffic in slaves…where outsiders are hunted for ransom. As you embark on a desperate quest to rescue your friends, you realize that the only way to escape this darkness is to embrace it.

Far Cry 3 garnered tremendous critical acclaim when it launched all those years ago. The title currently stands at 91 on Metacritic for the Xbox 360 version. Far Cry 3 was a lot "crazier" than its predecessors and that's why it surprised consumers. It's also why Far Cry 4 wasn't seen as much of an evolution for the franchise because it came across as quite similar. Hopefully the next Far Cry game—which may release in 2017—will be the jump everyone wants.

Microsoft partners with BrowserStack to provide free testing on Microsoft Edge to web developers

Microsoft is teaming up with BrowserStack to bring free Microsoft Edge testing to web developers. With BrowserStack, developers who don't have access to Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 can essentially their web pages and applications on the browser. Microsoft's partnership with BrowserStack will let developers use this service for free, which is really useful.

In addition to this, Microsoft's partnership with BrowserStack will also allow web developers to use its automated testing service. This feature will basically allow you to run up to 10 Microsoft Edge test sessions that you can integrate into your local test runners.

Microsoft and BrowserStack are currently letting developers test EdgeHTML 14 and 13 which are the latest versions of Microsoft Edge's rendering engine. Once Microsoft releases the Windows 10 Creators Update, web developers will also be able to try out EdgeHTML 15 for free. In addition to this, BrowserStack will also be allow developers to test Edge's latest preview (from the Windows Insider program) in the near-future.

In terms of the performance of BrowserStack, you obviously won't get a native experience as BrowserStack essentially streams a cloud-based instance of Microsoft Edge over WebRTC. Despite this, BrowserStack is a really useful tool and offers some good features for web developers hwo have to test a lot of websites and don't have access to a Windows 10 machine.

If you are interested in trying it out, make sure to give BrowserStack a try here.

The latest trailer for Injustice 2 shows off some of its villains

Injustice 2 is the sequel to Warner Bros and NetherRealm's superhero packed fighting game, and the latest trailer for it shows off the darker side of its cast. For every hero there's a villain, and DC's rogues gallery has a pretty impressive lineup that's grown steadily throughout the years – there's enough good villains to have their very own fighting game.

While it doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon, playing as some of them in Injustice is still pretty great, and today's trailer reveals that three more are headed to Injustice 2: Gorilla Grodd, Scarecrow, and Captain Cold. Bane's Injustice 2 version is also shown off, but he was already in the first game. You can watch the trailer below.

Each of the new additions looks pretty great so far, and Bane's new design is an interestingly slimmed down take on the character. Each one looks pretty fun to play as, and it's also good to see characters that took a background role in the first game upgraded to a fully playable status now.

Injustice 2 will be out on the 16th of May, 2017. You can pre-order it on Amazon before then, although the Prime savings discount sadly doesn't seem to apply.

Will you be picking up Injustice 2 when it launches this May? Which character is your favorite so far? Let us know in the comments below!

Lyft is finally coming to Windows 10

Lyft is finally coming to Windows 10 devices. The company today released its brand-new Universal Windows Platform app to the Windows Store, allowing users to get a ride from their Windows 10 PC as well as their Windows 10 Mobile device. Lyft's Windows 10 app is rolling out to users right now, and it will be available shortly to all users.

Here's the description of the app from the Windows Store:

Need a lift? Use Lyft to get an affordable ride in minutes. Instead of hailing a cab or waiting for the bus, just request a car with the tap of button, and get picked up by a nearby friendly driver who'll take you to your destination right away. Enjoy a welcoming, affordable, and memorable ride today.

Our app cheaper than a taxi, faster than the bus, and easy to use. And now you can use your Windows mobile phone or table to request your Lyft rides:

  • Getting Started: After downloading Lyft and signing up, simply open the app and request a ride.
  • Paying: Never worry about having cash for a cab or the bus again — with Lyft, you pay through your phone. It's easy, fast, and secure.
  • Split the Cost: Easily split the cost of a ride with friends through the app. No more IOU's.

The app itself is currently rolling out, so we weren't able to get any screenshots of the app just yet. But a Microsoft employee tweeted a screenshot of the app listing where you can get a small idea of how the app looks. From the looks of things, it seems like the app might just be a web wrapper for the company's web app — but we will let you know once this has been confirmed.

The Lyft app for Windows 10 will be available here from the Windows Store shortly.
