Rumour: Microsoft to fix Edge’s biggest problem with Redstone 3

We have been complaining over the last few months that, despite the improvements Microsoft has made to the Edge browser during the Creators Update, this was simply not enough to make it the default browser for more than a handful of users.

The issue is that Microsoft can simply not keep up with the torrid pace of innovation in Google Chrome when they only update their browser twice per year during major OS updates.

This is due to the app not being a Windows Store app, but according to a new report from Neowin.net, sourced from insiders, Microsoft will be addressing this in the September Redstone 3 Windows 10 update.

The app is heading to the store, and this would allow Microsoft to make as many updates as needed to the Edge browser to make it more competitive, an approach we saw working to great effect with the Groove music client, though of course there are no guarantees this will indeed be the case.

Of course, many apps rely on the stability of the Edge rendering engine, and Microsoft has said last year that even though they may update the browser independently, they are still likely to save rendering engine updates for major versions.

Still, if this means Edge will finally actually remember my set aside tabs instead of forgetting the collection as soon as I restore them I would be pretty happy.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and Star Wars: The Force Unleased II arrive early on Games with Gold

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and Star Wars: The Force Unleased II are available early through Games with Gold. Usually the games go up closer to midnight, but it seems that the timings are becoming more lenient as the months go by. Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is a blistering hardcore platformer with contrasting worlds. Warp Giana's vivid dreams to alter your abilities and destroy the twisted creatures lurking within. Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams combines the challenge of retro era platforming with graphics that pack a visual punch and tight controls. It's a lot of fun to play!

The Star Wars Saga continues with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, the highly-anticipated sequel to the then fastest-selling Star Wars game ever created. In Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, the world was introduced to Darth Vader's now fugitive apprentice, Starkiller—the unlikely hero who would ignite the flames of rebellion in a galaxy so desperately in need of a champion.

In the sequel, Starkiller returns with over-the-top Force powers and embarks on a journey to discover his own identity and to reunite with his one true love, Juno Eclipse. In Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Starkiller is once again the pawn of Darth Vader—but instead of training his apprentice as a ruthless assassin, the dark lord is attempting to clone his former apprentice in an attempt to create the Ultimate Sith warrior. The chase is on–Starkiller is in pursuit of Juno and Darth Vader is hunting Starkiller. While Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II may not be as well-regarded as its predecessor, the game still holds up well and is a definite improvement over the first one in terms of gameplay. Be sure to download both games if you're an Xbox Live Gold subscriber because they're great experiences.

HoloLens receive another out of this world assignment

Finnish research company VTT Technical Research Centre has developed an augmented reality tool using the Hololens which is designed to help space station astronauts be more precise and efficient.

The two-year EdcAR project (Engineering data in cross-platform AR) led by VTT developed a solution to the challenges involved in maintenance and the provision of work instructions, which have been an issue for more than a decade. Since maintenance and other work tasks in space are critical, they must be carried out without errors and at the right time. Preparing for these requires in-depth practising, which involves coordinating the activities of various experts. Since astronauts' time is extremely valuable, their tasks and maintenance instructions must be unambiguous.

The new EdcAR project, based on the Microsoft HoloLens, makes the invisible visible by enabling the visualisation of telemetry data from equipment and other systems on board the space station, such as fault diagnostics, the latest maintenance data, life cycle, radiation, pressure or temperature – both in space and on the ground.

It also guides astronauts through tasks by displaying detailed visual instructions on the astronauts' AR glasses, guiding them step by step to perform the necessary procedures in the right order, such as "now press this button", "then turn the lever (B)". The system is expected to reduce mistakes, speed up the tasks and improve the clarity of the instruction by the use of AR technology.

"The AR system that we developed runs on the Microsoft HoloLens platform. It supports the astronauts' work in a completely new way by displaying key telemetry data through an IoT (Internet-of-Things) interface," explains Project Manager Kaj Helin of VTT.

In the future, it is envisaged that astronauts will be able to use this tool to perform maintenance tasks and real-time equipment monitoring in the demanding conditions of space. The first practical tests performed in the ISS-Columbus training mock-up located in the ESA's on-ground European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany, produced excellent results.

"This is very impressive! We are exploring possibilities for an EdcAR follow on," says David Martinez Oliveira, Technical Officer, ESA.

The two-year project was funded by ESA. The project partners are VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Thales Alenia Space, Italy and France, and ICCS (Institute of Communications and Computer Systems), Greece.

Windows 10 users finally have a cloud storage option which offers actual privacy

Cloud storage is great and increasingly essential, as we move to PCs with small SSD storage and multiple mobile devices with even less.

Unfortunately, these usually come with very stringent terms of service which mean companies are free to snoop on the content of these online drives and explicitly forbid uploading items which may raise copyright or obscenity concerns.

Fortunately for Windows users, there is one company which has always thumbed their nose at both of those community standards, and they have now released a UWP app for Windows 10 users on phone and PC to try out.

Currently, in alpha, the MEGA Privacy app is a secure cloud storage service that gives you 50 GB free storage space. Unlike other cloud storage providers, your data is encrypted and decrypted by your client devices only and never by the company itself, which means they never know what your online archive contains.

Like other cloud storage services they let you upload your files from your smartphone or tablet, then search, store, download, stream, view, share, rename or delete your files anytime, from any device, anywhere.  You can also share folders with your contacts and see their updates in real time.

Because everything is encrypted with your own personal key the company can not reset your password, and you will lose access to all your data if you lose it, which is the hallmark of an actual secure service.

See screenshots of the MEGA Privacy app below:

The app replaces the old Windows Phone version which was slow and not a UWP app. It is currently in Alpha but adventurous users can find it in the store here.

Microsoft may not be the first with a Snapdragon 835 Windows 10 laptop

The first Windows 10 on ARM PCs are expected to hit the market this holiday season, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor.

It is widely expected that Microsoft will be leading the market with their own Surface-branded laptop first before other OEMs weigh in, but according to Digitimes another company may get there first.

They report that some upstream suppliers believe the new product would either be from Microsoft or a Lenovo-branded 2 in 1.

Lenovo already produces ARM-powered Chromebooks, such as the Lenovo Flex 11, which is a 2-in-1 convertible notebook powered by a 2.1 GHz quad-core ARM processor with a 11.6-inch IPS multi-touch HD display, water-resistant keyboard, USB 3.0, USB Type-C, HDMI, a mic/audio jack, and an SD card slot, delivering up to 10-hour battery life and starting at $279.

Because the ARM tablets are expected to run the Cloud version of Windows 10 and would be tied to the Windows Store the PCs are expected to be on the cheaper end of the spectrum such as the Flex 11 above.

Digitimes notes that the move would increase pressure on Intel, which has not been able to successfully branch out of the x86 PC and server market, which should mean better prices and increased innovation for Intel users, even if we do not buy into Microsoft's new ARM-powered ecosystem.

The EU abolish roaming charges across Europe starting 15th June

Soon mobile users travelling to other countries in the EU will be able to call, text or use the internet without paying any extra charges after the European Council voted to impose caps on how much carriers can charge each other to allow users to roam.

"Today's final vote in the Council clears the path for free roaming," said Dr Emmanuel Mallia, the Maltese Minister for Competitiveness and Digital, Maritime and Services Economy. "When Europeans go on holiday this summer, they can enjoy the freedom of being able to stay in touch and use the internet as if they were at home. The EU is making our lives easier in very practical ways."

The new protection will cover all 28 EU countries and also Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway shortly after 15 June.

While no extra charges will be imposed when users travel to a different country, the EU does not intend that users should shop around for cheapest plan around Europe and use them permanently in more expensive markets.

"Roam like at home" is meant to make communicating while travelling easier. It is not intended to allow permanent roaming where a customer would take out a subscription in the cheapest possible country and use it to roam in his home country. If you spend more time in the new market than the old over a 4 month period an operator may contact you to clarify the situation, and then impose charged of up to  €7.7 per GB for not complying with the rules.

Special rules also apply to phone plans with unlimited data and pre-paid cards, but operators will have to inform users ahead of time of any restrictions, and the maximum additional data charge is capped at €7.70/GB + VAT; this will decline gradually to reach €2.50/GB as of 2022.

Users do not have to do anything to activate the new charging plans but users can elect to keep their old roaming plans if they feel they are more beneficial than the new arrangement (e.g. better deals for the rest of the world.)

The UK remains covered by the deal, but these details will likely be renegotiated when UK finally exits the EU.

Read the EU's official FAQ here for more details.

Microsoft launches new Arabic font in partnership with The Executive Council of Dubai

Microsoft is today launching a new free typeface. The company is partnering with The Executive Council of Dubai for the new Arabic font, simply called the "Dubai" font. The Dubai font will ship with Microsoft's Office apps, and it's apparently the first font to ship with Office where both Arabic and Latin were designed at the same time. There are 4 different weights for the font face: Regular, Light, Medium, and Bold.

The Executive Council of Dubai also released a website dedicated to the Dubai Font, where users can find details about the font, and download it. Here are some of the key points:

Expression is the way everyone shares their thoughts, ideas and emotions. Writing is a form of expressing oneself and Dubai is giving the world a new tool to communicate with. The Dubai Font. Designed to unite the world through the power of expression. The Dubai Font is a project commissioned by His Highness, Sheikh Hamdan, and launched by The Executive Council of Dubai in partnership with Microsoft.

The source of inspiration is firmly rooted in local heritage (a mix of Muhaqqaq and Naskh for the Arabic, and Dutch design for the Latin) while embracing the modern and the innovative. The design follows traditional aesthetics but the treatment is very contemporary and clean.

The Dubai Font supports the reading of Arabic and Latin scripts on screen by offering top class typefaces that support legibility and reading. It also bridges the design gap between Arabic and Latin texts by providing harmonious typefaces that combine the two scripts seamlessly. In addition, it makes high quality typography available to everyone, especially for app developers and web designers and thereby supports the tech industry by making quality fonts available with no licensing costs attached.

The website explains that the number of Arabic fonts available right now is "relatively" small, and finding free Arabic fonts for both private and commercial use can be difficult. With the new Dubai Font, Microsoft and The Executive Council of Dubai hope to fix that.

If you are interested, you can get the Dubai Font here.

Netflix to bring their content to Windows Mixed Reality

A job post has revealed that streaming TV company Netflix is set to adapt their official UWP app for the HoloLens mixed reality environment.

The job posting reads:

A Netflix spokesperson has confirmed that the deal won't revolve around 3D content, but rather on delivering 2D content in an immersive environment much like on their Oculus Rift app (below). Netflix is said to be sceptical about the demand for full 3D content beyond gaming.

While this may be tepid support, with a comfortable enough VR headset the experience can actually be quite immersive and offer a big screen experience without having a massive display on the wall, so the timely arrival of the app will be quite welcome.

It’s ok to still enjoy using Windows Phones in 2017

My first personal tablet was a BlackBerry Playbook – yes – one of those doomed devices of yore. When I used it I wasn't aware of tech news as much, I used the device to browse the internet, read books, listen to music and research and write list based articles back in the day. BlackBerry eventually orphaned the Playbook and declined to update it to BlackBerry 10 – which also failed in the market. While I was quite disappointed, my Playbook still functioned as it did when I first got it. I could play light games on it, and my reading and music consumption were unaffected.
Windows phones are – in my opinion – in the same place. It is all but dead at this point, and while Microsoft may send out some cursory bug fixes and new builds to Windows 10 Mobile every now and then but like the Creators Update and to some extent – the Anniversary Update before it – those new updates don't do much other than rearrange the deck chairs on this OS. But you know what? That's ok.
Many Windows Phone owners are also tech enthusiasts, Windows phone's situation wasn't exactly a secret in 2015, and Microsoft's dedication has been in question long before then. Chances are, if you're using Windows phones today, you enjoy live tiles, you like the UWP vision, and you like Microsoft's user interface and ideas. That's also fine.

There are many things to like about the Windows phone operating system. Personally I think it has one of the best notification centres at this point.  It isn't too cluttered, or too minimalist – but just right.  On the home screen, live tiles are pretty and have attracted a following from users who at this point can't imagine using anything else with the same ease. The clean lines of the MDL2 interface and Metro back in the day were also an attractive reason that is often cited for . Heck even with all the criticisms that can be lobbed at Continuum – and I have been very critical – there's no denying that it is a cool feature that appeals to the idea of gadget minimalism.

Sure, I use an iPhone now as my main device, but my favourite Windows phone (the Lumia 735, which I hunted down and purchased even after it went EOL) still works when I want it to. It makes calls, it receives texts, I can IM with WhatsApp and Messenger if I wanted to, and I can still enjoy all those little things I liked about Windows phones without feeling like I'm compromising.

The point is, whatever you liked about Windows phone, it is not going away in any meaningful period of time. If you're still on a Windows phone and you've read this far down, it is likely that you still like the OS and you actively enjoy using it – even if that means giving up access to the millions of apps and services. There's no sign that Microsoft is investing in Windows Phone as much as it did a few years ago or that it plans to, but that doesn't mean it still won't get updates for the near term. Windows 10 Mobile's stock apps are still getting updates in line with their desktop variants, and Microsoft is pushing out new builds to squash bugs and improve the performance of the OS for the few remaining loyal users. Even if Microsoft stops supporting Windows phones entirely, by that time your Lumia 950 or 930 or whatever would most likely be just about ready to be replaced. You would have gotten your money's worth, and perhaps it would be time to move on to iOS, Android, Sailfish or whatever Microsoft's new take on mobile is.
If I had to sum it up, I'd say that the point of this column overall is the same message is that it shouldn't matter to users how the story of Windows Phone closes as long as they enjoyed the experience. After all, that's the only thing that does matter in the end.

Bethesda teases new games for E3 2017 in invite

Bethesda recently sent out invitations for their E3 2017 briefing which will take place on June 11 at 6.30 PM after Microsoft's event. Over the past few weeks, many insiders have stated that a new Wolfenstein title called New Colossus will be revealed alongside The Evil Within 2 which apparently leaked in a job listing from Japan.

They may be some truth to these rumors because the invite showcases Bethesda's staple franchises like Doom and The Elder Scrolls, but there are two places which are "under construction". While they could be any two games—maybe even new franchises—it's likely that we'll see a new Wolfenstein game and The Evil Within's sequel. We can't know for sure so we'll have to wait until E3 2017 to find out. Luckily the wait won't be too long because the briefing is only a few weeks away!

You might be able to purchase Xbox One and 360 games from the Windows Store in the future

The Xbox Beta app on Windows 10 just got updated to version 28.28 (for comparison, stable is 27.28) and while there's no big changes on the surface, there's an interesting change you won't see right away. When opening up games in the Xbox One section of the store, they would always open in the app. From there you could access the game's hub, see clips, and purchase it. Going to the Windows 10 section and attempting to open a game would cause the Windows Store to open instead.

Version 28.28 unifies that, with both Xbox One and Xbox 360 games opening in the Windows Store. It's been possible to open Xbox games in the Windows Store with the right command for a long time, but it's never been possible – and still currently isn't possible – to purchase them from there. That's presumably going to change.

There's no reason for Microsoft to unify the store for games on the Xbox One and Windows 10 without adding the functionality to buy them from there as well. Currently opening them in the Windows Store will tell you to open up the store page on a device the game will run on, making it impossible to buy games from the Xbox beta app for now.

If Microsoft ends up adding the functionality to buy Xbox games from the regular Windows Store, it's a change that makes sense, and is another step in unifying the company's platforms. However, it's worth noting that as this is an announced change in a beta version of the Xbox app, Microsoft's plans could change at any time.

What do you think of this? Let us know in the comments below!

Phil Spencer says single-player games like Horizon Zero Dawn don’t have the same impact as before

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Phil Spencer said that games like Overwatch which recently crossed 30 million players have more of an impact in terms of sales than single-player experiences such as Horizon Zero Dawn which sold a fraction of that. This wasn't the case a few years ago because single-player adventures dominated the space. However, as the focus on replayability and value has become an important topic and consideration for gamers, multiplayer titles are dominating the industry. Just look at Halo 5: Guardians. Despite its weak campaign, the player count stood at 16.5 million a year ago before its trial and free-to-play Windows 10 version released. Gamers want titles which they can regularly come back to, and having a solid multiplayer component is key to that. Spencer added:

"The audience for those big story-driven games…I won't say it isn't as large, but they're not as consistent. You'll have things like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Horizon Zero Dawn that'll come out, and they'll do really well, but they don't have the same impact that they used to have because the big service-based games are capturing such a large amount of the audience. Sony's first-party studios do a lot of these games, and they're good at them, but outside of that, it's difficult–they've become more rare…It's a difficult business decision for those teams, you're fighting into more headwind. We've got to understand that if we enjoy those games, the business opportunity has to be there for them. I love story-based games. I just finished Thimbleweed Park…Inside was probably my game of last year. As an industry, I want to make sure both narrative-driven single-player games and service-based games have the opportunity to succeed. I think that's critical for us."

While I agree with Spencer's analysis of recent industry trends. I think it's necessary for Microsoft to invest in strong single-player games along the lines of The Last of Us. Right now the company relies on multiplayer titles and games like Halo 5: Guardians and Gears of War 4 are proof of that. While they're a great way to make money through microtransactions, they don't elevate the standing of the brand. In order to grow as a company, and change the perception people have of the Xbox brand—one which lacks meaningful, mature first-party games—Microsoft has to support single-player experiences more in the future. They already have an exceptional multiplayer portfolio. If the quality is there, sales will come. You don't need to have 30 million players like Overwatch to be successful.

World of Tanks is already running at native 4K on Project Scorpio

World of Tanks is a free-to-play sensation boasting millions of players over multiple platforms. However, where can players find the definitive World of Tanks experience? Well, it looks like Project Scorpio is the answer. In a recent Q&A session on their website, the game developers said:

This is great news and another game which will run at native 4K on Project Scorpio. World of Tanks joins titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and more which will offer native 4K support for Project Scorpio. According to sources, experiences like Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront II are also expected to run at native 4K, and in some cases 60 FPS on the upcoming console.

For those who haven't played World of Tanks, it's a massively multiplayer online game developed by Wargaming, featuring early to mid-20th century era combat vehicles. It's built upon a freemium business model where the game is free-to-play, but participants also have the option of paying a fee for use of premium features. If you're in the market for an expansive vehicular fighting game, then look no further.

Microsoft’s 10Q SEC filing confirms investment in Windows Phone has ended

We wrote 2 das ago on a second-hand report from Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott saying 'Microsoft's wind-down of its phone business is "expected to be completed by the end of the current fiscal year."' Now Microsoft's official 10Q SEC filing, which is a legal document which is required to be accurate, has also confirmed the lack of investment in the future of Microsoft's smartphone OS.

In the section speaking about risks, and specifically about the return on investment, it is notable that Windows Phone is missing from the list of investments Microsoft is making.

While some may say Windows Phone is long dead and we are now in the age of Windows 10 Mobile, this was of course as true 3 months ago, when Microsoft still claimed to be investing in that arena. It is also notable that the line is not referring to Lumia hardware, but appears to be talking about the entire OS.

At this point with even Microsoft selling Android phones in their stores, should our readers who are still using Windows Phones also be planning their exit, and if so, where would you go? The super-flexible but somewhat unstable Android ecosystem or the gilded cage of iOS? Let us know below.

Windows 10 Tip: Cerebro is a great Apple Spotlight alternative for Windows 10

Apple's Spotlight is a great feature on Mac OS and iOS. It lets you easily search for things on your computer, as well as the web. Windows 10's Search that's built into Cortana is also pretty good when it comes to search, but it isn't flawless and sometimes the search results aren't really accurate.

Meet Cerebro, a new app for Windows 10, and other older versions of Windows that brings an Apple Spotlight-like experience to Windows. I've been using the tool for the past few days and it really is awesome. Once you download and install the tool, all you need to do is hit Ctrl + Spacebar and it will open up. From there, you can search for anything you want — so for instance, if you want to open Spotify, you can simply search for the app and hit enter to open it up. Searching for applications on Cerebro isn't its best feature because it currently can't find Windows Store apps which might be annoying if you heavily depend on the modern Windows Store apps.

But what makes Cerebro so great is the fact that you can install plugins to expand its functionality. At the moment, there are nearly 60 plugins for Cerebro and almost all of them are pretty awesome. Ther's a plugin that lets you search for questions on Stackoverflow and get the answers right on the Cerebro window, for instance. And if you're a GIF-lover, there's a plugin that lets you search for GIFs on Giphy directly from Cerebro. There's a lot of other plugins for Cerebro, including one to see the weather for a particular city, one for IMDB, Twitter, and even Reddit.

Cerebro isn't perfect by any means, the experience is a bit rough and the plugins sometimes don't work properly. But Cerebro is still in its early stages of development, and if you want to help make it better, you can do so via GitHub as it's an open source project.

You can get Cerebro here for Windows 10.

Skype for Windows 10 updated with improvements to screen sharing

The Skype app in Windows 10 picked up a new update on the Windows Store today. The latest update is available to Windows Insiders for now, but it'll likely get rolled out to the public later. In terms of features, there isn't a lot of new things in the update but it brings some pretty neat changes.

For one, you can now share your PC's audio when you share your screen on a call. Previously, Skype only let you share the screen itself, meaning that it was impossible to share the audio from your PC which could be pretty annoying in some scenarios.

Another neat change coming to the Skype app is that you can now view a photo right from the app itself, rather than having to open up Microsoft Photos. In the past, Skype used to open up the Microsoft Photos app to display a photo from a conversation but thankfully that's no longer the case. If you would still like to view pictures in the Photos app, there's a button in the Skype app that will let you open up a picture on the Microsoft Photos app instead so that you can edit or draw over it.

And lastly, the Skype app now includes a handy little button for feedback which you can click to submit feedback about the app via the Feedback Hub in Windows 10.

If you are a Windows Insider in the Fast Ring, you can get the latest update for Skype from the Windows Store below.

Here’s when you can expect to buy Windows Mixed Reality headsets from Dell, Acer, HP, Lenovo and 3Glasses

At CES 2017  Microsoft showed off Windows Mixed Reality headsets from a number of OEMs including  Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and 3Glasses.

The glasses have a similar design, all being tethered to your PC and featuring headbands which suspend the glasses in front of your eyes, and in most cases allowed the glasses to be flipped up, making it easier to combine regular and VR work at the same time. The glasses are expected to be in the $300-400 range and work with a  $500 PC or the integrated graphics of a laptop.

We had expected the glasses to arrive towards the end of Q1 2017, to coincide with the Creators Update, but of course, that ship has sailed already.

Now in a tweet the head of Mixed Reality and HoloLens, Alex Kipman, suggested all 5 headsets will be arriving by Holidays 2017. He tweeted:

Acer's Developer Edition headset is expected to be seeded to developers soon, and Lenovo had suggested their headset will be available for the Back to School season, ie around August.

Recent hands-on's with Acer's headset has shown the company has continued to make improvements in the performance and usability of the devices, for example upping the framerate to 90fps and increasing the tethering cord length to 13 feet

See the headsets in the gallery below:
