Microsoft Q3 2017 Earnings prove PC is back as Windows OEM revenue increase 5% YoY

We have seen recent reports from the IDC which suggest the Windows PC market was bouncing back, with the IDC finding the worldwide PC market has experienced Year on Year growth for the first time in 5 years.

Now Microsoft has confirmed the trend, reporting that Windows OEM revenue has increased 5% Year on Year. The IDC suggested growth was driven by the commercial PC market going through a replacement cycle and that consumers were attracted to new classes of PCs such as thin and light laptops and gaming PCs and laptops. Acer today for example reported 120% YoY growth in the detachable Windows market and noted great acceptance for the form factor, which has seen Windows significantly grow its share of the tablet market.

Whatever the cause for the growth, the news is good for Microsoft's goal of making the PC market more relevant and growing the Windows 10 market and its associated services.

The company reported a total revenue of $22.1 billion GAAP, which is down from $25.7 billion YoY.
