Bug fixes in the Windows Subsystem for Linux in Windows 10 14915 Build

windows 10 redstone

Windows 10 comes with Bash on Ubuntu feature which enables native Linux ELF64 binaries to run on Windows via the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). WSL is primarily comprised of an user mode session manager service that handles the Linux instance life cycle, pico provider drivers (lxss.sys, lxcore.sys) that emulate a Linux kernel by translating Linux syscalls and pico processes that host the unmodified user mode Linux (e.g. /bin/bash).

Microsoft today released Windows 10 Build 14915 to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring. This build includes some updates to the Windows Subsystem for Linux. Find the list of bug fixes in this release below,

  • Socketpair for unix datagram sockets (GH #262)
  • Unix socket support for SO_REUSEADDR
  • UNIX socket support for SO_BROADCAST (GH #568)
  • Unix socket support for SOCK_SEQPACKET (GH #758, #546)
  • Adding support for unix datagram socket send, recv and shutdown
  • Fix bugcheck due to invalid mmap parameter validation for non-fixed addresses. (GH #847)
  • Support for suspend / resume of terminal states
  • Support for TIOCPKT ioctl to unblock the Screen utility (GH #774)
    • Known issue: Function keys not operational
  • Corrected a race in TimerFd that could cause a freed member 'ReaderReady' to be accessed by LxpTimerFdWorkerRoutine (GH #814)
  • Enable restartable system call support for futex, poll, and clock_nanosleep
  • Added bind mount support
  • unshare for mount namespace support
    • Known issue: When creating a new mount namespace with unshare(CLONE_NEWNS) the current working directory will continue to point to the old namespace
  • Additional improvements and bug fixes

This stackable modular PC be Microsoft’s Surface All In One (patent)

surface aio patent 9

We have heard rumours that Microsoft is working on an All In One PC for Q3-Q4 2016, but we were not particularly inspired by just another desktop.

If a newly published patent application by Microsoft is any indication however their All In One may be a much more interesting device.

Microsoft appears to be striking out in the direction of modular design, saying:

The range and functionality of hardware resources that are made available for use with a computing device is ever increasing. For example, faster processors, memories that support larger storage amounts, wireless communication devices that support increased bandwidth, and so on are being continually developed.  However, conventional techniques that made this increased functionality available to a user generally involved the replacement of a user's current device with a new device having this functionality. Thus, these conventional techniques can be expensive and thus avoided by a user, thereby limiting a device maker's opportunity to provide this increased functionality to users.

Modular computing device techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a computing device includes a display modular component including a housing, a display device physically and communicatively coupled to the housing via a hinge, and one or more display hardware elements disposed within the housing that are configured to output a display for display by the display device. The computing device also includes a computing modular component including a housing that is physically and communicatively coupled to the display modular component, a processing system disposed within the housing, and memory disposed within the housing. The processing system is configured to execute instructions stored by the processing system to generate a user interface for display by the display device of the display modular component.

The patent illustrates a very fleshed out device with numerous ideas taken from Microsoft's existing technologies.

surface aio patent 2

Microsoft's vision is off a modular device which can be expanded (by memory, storage, sensors, wireless etc.) by simply adding another level, held together either via magnets or slots or a combination of the two.

The screen can be rotated, and has a weighted base which can include the usual requisite ports.

surface aio patent 1

Microsoft imagines that the hinge may even be motorized, being able to change position by itself with a wave of the hand.

surface aio patent 3

They also see the screen being detachable, much like the Surface Book, with the device recognizing when its being grasped by two hands using sensors on its bezel and detaching its clasps in response.

The screen can then be attached to various other locations, such as walls or even dolleys.

surface aio patent 4

Microsoft also envisions that the AIO may house a keyboard in some of its layers, or more interestingly may project a keyboard when in the vertical position, and sense typing via a Kinect-like camera.

The patent is unusual for its fully rendered drawings and is chock-full of specifications such as:

…the display device 114 includes a "glass to the edge" configuration in which the display reaches to an edge between a front and side surfaces. The display device 114 has a thickness of less than nine millimeters (e.g., 8.5 millimeters), and includes microphones, a three-dimensional camera as part of the display, speakers and a rubber bumper along the bottom, removable storage (e.g., SD) and a USB connection along the side.

… which suggests Microsoft may be describing a real device or prototype.

With rumours suggesting we may see an AIO from Microsoft soon, this may be our best look at the device yet.

Would our readers stump up for such a versatile, innovative and expandable device? Let us know below.

Microsoft working on integrating a Flux-like feature into Windows 10

windows-10

References to a new feature which closely resembles f.lux have been found in files of the recently released Windows 10 Insider build number 14915. The feature itself is called Blue Light Reduction and will be accessible from Action Center with a Quick Action toggle on Windows 10.

As of right now, no part of this feature is accessible in the rs_prerelease lab, which means Insiders will not be able to use this feature just yet. By taking a close look at a few new system files, we were able to see the key functions that this feature will offer.

In case the user turns on Blue Light Reduction, they'll be able to leave it in Automatic mode or select Manual mode. Automatic mode is based on the system's clock, turning on the feature at sunset and turning it off at sunrise. Manual mode will allow users to set their own time for when Blue Light Reduction should come into effect. Users will also be able to tweak the Blue Light Temperature that the display will adjust itself to once the feature is activated. Signs of this feature making use of your current location are also present, perhaps to make the Blue Light Reduction transition even more seamless.

Are you looking forward to this feature making a public appearance in future builds of Windows 10? Let us know in the comments below.

HP Elite x3 (and every other) Windows 10 Mobile handset can now be Interop Unlocked

interop tools

We posted earlier today on a hack to Interop Unlock the Lumia x50 series of Windows 10 Mobile handsets (Lumia 550, 650, 950 and 950 XL.) Interop Unlocking a handset gives users full control of their phone, meaning they can install any arbitrary software with full permissions, overwrite any registry entries and even run .exe software.

Now the hackers on XDA-Developers have extended the hack to include smartphones from ANY OEM, including the newest HP Elite X3.

The procedure is of course not for the faint-hearted, but if you ever wanted to set your device time-out to infinite or install that particular shade of accent colour which Microsoft did not provide you now have your solution.

Read the full instructions and find the needed packages at XDA-Developers here.

Microsoft announces Office 365 Groups integration on SharePoint Online team sites

New-capabilities-in-SharePoint-Online-team-sites-including-integration-with-Office-365-Groups-4

Microsoft today announced a couple of major updates coming to SharePoint Online Team sites today. The company is adding the ability to easily create site pages using SharePoint online. This feature will allow users to create websites that look great on all types of devices. Users can add things like documents, videos, images, site activities, and much more to SharePoint pages. Additionally, there's a new Highlighted Content web part which will allow users to highlight some parts of their SharePoint page.

Another major update coming to SharePoint Online Team sites is the integration of Office 365 Groups. With this integration, when  you create a Group on Office 365, the service will automatically create a SharePoint team site. The SharePoint team site will include a modern homepage, but users will be able to create additional pages if they want. As for the homepage, Microsoft has redesigned it to put more focus on a team's most important content. The homepage will also include things like Quick Links and Activity which will make it a lot easier for users to keep an eye on their Office 365 Group right from the SharePoint team site.

Lastly, Microsoft is also making a pretty huge change to SharePoint. The company has increased the storage limit for SharePoint Online site collection to 25TB from 1TB, which is quite a lot. At the moment, Microsoft is rolling out some of these changes — however, the company notes that existing SharePoint team sites already have the modern pages. As for the other features, Microsoft sill start rolling them out in the near-future.

  • You may experience a black screen when signing out and switching to another user account and will be unable to log in to that account. A reboot of your PC should allow you to log in to that account.
  • Bash may not work after upgrading to this build. To get it working again, go to "Turn Windows features on or off", scroll down and check "Windows Subsystem for Linux (beta)" and click ok.  After a reboot, Bash should work again.
  • The Settings app may crash when going to Settings > Personalization.

Known issues for Mobile:

  • We don't have any known issues to list right now for Mobile with this build but that doesn't mean there are not any issues. If anything pops up based on feedback, we'll add to this list.

Here’s what’s fixed and improved in Windows 10 Build 14915 for PCs and Mobile

windows-10-mobile

Microsoft today released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14915 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. The update brings a new feature called Delivery Optimization, which will apparently improve the performance of Windows Store and Windows Update downloads. The update also comes with a handful of improvements and bug fixes which are always nice to see.

Here's what's improved and fixed for PCs:

  • We fixed the issue with being unable to use the power button on the Start menu.
  • We fixed the issue causing Cortana's text to speech capabilities to not work. Cortana should be able to read text messages out loud for you, tell jokes, sing, or give verbal prompts as expected.
  • We fixed the issue causing the Settings app to crash on certain editions of Windows 10 when navigating to different settings pages due to a missing .dll file.
  • We made a number of improvements to translations, including fixing an issue in Windows Update where it would say "your phone is up to date" in French when confirming that your PC was up to date.
  • Changing functionality via Settings > Update & security > Windows Insider Program such as your ring settings should now work again on this build. For more information – see this forum post.
  • We fixed a compatibility issue from a recent platform change that causes apps such as Yahoo Mail, Trivia Crack, Google and the Skype Translator Preview app to crash.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders experiencing a delay in Mail notification toasts appearing.
  • We fixed an issue where the "Open with" dialog's "Look for another app on this PC" link wasn't working if the dialog appeared after using the "Run" dialog to open a file with an unassociated file type.
  • We have updated the Connect flyout so that the clickable area for each device listed now spans across the full width of the flyout.
  • We fixed an issue where if a Chinese Input Method Editor is active it could result in logging in to not succeed after device goes into and is woken up from Connected Standby.
  • We fixed an issue where for certain websites in Microsoft Edge, using CTRL + A to select all text and then copying it and trying to paste it into Notepad wouldn't paste anything.
  • We fixed an issue where importing favorites into Microsoft Edge from Internet Explorer would fail if the Favorites folder had been redirected to another folder, for example "C:\Users\<user>\Documents\Favorites".

And here's the improvements for Mobile:

  • We fixed the issue causing apps to get stuck in a pending state if you move apps between a SD card and internal storage (either direction).
  • We fixed the issue causing Cortana's text to speech capabilities to not work. Cortana should be able to read text messages out loud for you, tell jokes, sing, or give verbal prompts as expected.
  • We made a number of improvements to translations, including fixing an issue with Store app install notifications, where the wrong verb was used in German when letting you know to check out the app.
  • We have updated "You need to fix your MSA" notification toast logic, so it will no longer notify you multiple times in quick succession.
  • We fixed an issue where examining Microsoft Edge's advanced settings would result in subsequent downloads in Edge saving to the default locations, rather the preferred locations set under Settings > System > Storage.
  • We fixed an issue for Continuum-capable devices that could result in being temporarily unable to connect to a previously paired Windows 10 PC.
  • We have updated the settings for sounds so that .mp3 or .wma files downloaded straight from OneDrive or copied from File Explorer to the phone's Ringtones folder will now display automatically in the list of available sounds for ringtones, alarms and notifications.

To get the latest update, just head over to Windows Update in your Windows 10 device (Settings > Update & Security) to check for updates and download.

Windows 10 Build 14915 now available to Insiders

windows-10

Microsoft is today releasing a new update for Windows 10 to those on the Windows Insider program's Fast Ring. The software giant is releasing build 14915 for PCs and Mobile devices today which includes a number of improvements but the exciting stuff isn't here just yet. Similar to some of the recent Windows 10 builds, build 14915 doesn't include a lot of new features as Microsoft is making changes to OneCore. The build also includes quite a few known issues, so you shouldn't run it on your main device unless you are fine with some bugs. As for the highlight feature of this build, Microsoft is introducing improved app and update downloads in Windows 10 with Delivery Optimization which will speed up Windows Store and Windows Update downloads.

As per usual, to get the latest update, just head over to Windows Update in your Windows 10 device (Settings > Update & Security) to check for updates and download. Keep in mind

Titanfall 2’s new titans get unveiled and detailed

Titanfall 2 Titans featured image

Titanfall 2, Respawn Entertainment's followup to their original hit from 2014, has a few major things that set it apart from other shooters. The biggest game changers, though, are the titular titans, and four brand new ones have just been unveiled. This brings the total amount of titans up to six, and the two titans from the Tech Test are now detailed, too. You can check out the unveiling trailer below.

The four new titans are Legion, Ronin, Northstar, and Tone. Ion and Scorch were both available in the previously mentioned Tech Test.

The Titanfall 2 website goes even more in depth about the titans, and explains how they play. Legion is described as a "frontline unit" that's all about defense, and comes with a minigun by default. Ronin is the sword wielding mech that got teased all the way back during the game's original announcement, but also comes with a shotgun. Northstar uses the plasma railgun from Titanfall 1, and appears to be the sniper class. The final new titan, Tone, is a bit harder to classify.

Tone's abilities are almost all focused on locking on to targets – even the 40mm Tracker Cannon, the mech's default weapon, "acquires a partial lock-on". Aside from a defensive particle shield, every other ability is about finding your target and sending pain their way. It seems like this will make for a pretty interesting play style, and definitely makes Tone stand out from the others.

Titanfall 2 will release on October 28th of this year for both PC and Xbox One. If you'd like to pre-order the Xbox One version of the game, you can find it on Amazon here, and the Xbox Store here.

What do you think about the new titans in Titanfall 2? Which one will you use the most? Let us know in the comments below!

FYI: Microsoft is killing Sunrise Calendar today

sunrise-calendar

Last year, Microsoft acquired Sunrise for a reported $100 million. Following the acquisition, the company announced that it'll be killing Sunrise's app and integrating some of Sunrise's features into Outlook. Today, Sunrise Calendar is dead. When Microsoft announced that it'll be discontinuing Sunrise, they stated:

The entire Sunrise team is now working side-by-side with the Outlook team and it's a thrilling moment for us to work on an app of this scale. Unfortunately, as all good stories go, there's a sad bit to it: we're not able to support and update Sunrise anymore. No new features. No bug fixes. For us, that's the definition of a lousy app and it's not a user experience we want to leave you with.

So far, lots of users are disappointed to see Sunrise die. It was one of the best calendar apps out there: it had all the important features, and it had a beautiful user interface which provided a seamless experience. Sunrise team already worked with Microsoft to bring some major changes to Outlook, especially on Mobile devices. Several months ago, Microsoft released a new design for Outlook on Android and iOS, integrating Outlook Calendar into the Outlook app. Outlook Calendar also includes some of the features that were in the Sunrise Calendar app.

Sunrise Calendar will still be missed by its users — but unfortunately, it probably won't be coming back in the future. RIP, Sunrise.

Asus’s gold Surface Pro clone is coming to Europe

surface-in-gold

Fancy a gold Surface Pro 3? Microsoft may not be selling those just quite yet but Asus's got you covered with not one, but two differences – the Asus Transformer 3 and the Transformer 3 Pro. While both devices were announced at Computex earlier this year, they were only available for sale in Taiwan and other Asian markets. Now, at IFA 2016 Asus has announced that they will be bringing these devices to the European market as well.

With a kickstand, removable keyboard and Windows 10 on board, Asus's Transformer 3 Pro looks like the Surface Pro 3's long lost brother Jeff  who went on a rebellious stage with gold and a tattoo on his forehead. But that doesn't mean this device doesn't come with some new tricks of its own. While it comes with the standard metal kickstand and backlit Transformer Cover Keyboard  – it also brings with it a 3K resolution display and Harman Kardon-powered stereo speakers. It's a bit pricey, starting at €1200 for the base secs and going all the way up to  €1800 for the i7 equipped, 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM powerhouse.

ASUS also has a lower cost version for users with more modest wallets. It's thinner and lighter than the Surface Pr Transformer 3 Pro, coming in at 6.9 mm to its 8.35 mm, but it tops out at 512 GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM, combined with a Transformer sleeve keyboard for  a less premium experience.

For those looking for future looking.experiences, both devices pack USB Type-C ports, and fingerprint readers for authentication via Windows Hello.

They'll be available later this year, so if you're interested you'll probably be able to find it at your local retailer, Amazon or direct from Asus themselves.

You probably should change your Dropbox password now

Dropbox Office

Dropbox's placeholders may be a tempting feature for Windows users longing for a OneDrive replacement, but if you've been using Dropbox before 2012 – you need to change your password right now – or switch services to something else.

In 2012, Dropbox fell victim to an attack enabled by a negligent employee who had their password stolen and used to further steal  details of the passwords of millions of Dropbox users. While Dropbox earlier then assured customers that no customer details were compromised, it seems that they were severely mistaken.

According to a report originating from MotherBoard and later corroborated independently by security researcher Troy Hunt, the legitimate user accounts and passwords of several million Dropbox users from that earlier leak have now been posted on the internet for hackers and other entities to use at their whim.

From the initial report, Motherboard states that it "obtained a selection of files containing email addresses and hashed passwords for the Dropbox users through sources in the database trading community. In all, the four files total in at around 5GB, and contain details on 68,680,741 accounts. The data is legitimate, according to a senior Dropbox employee"

This comes this week after Dropbox initiated a forced user password reset for a selection of users it believed to have been caught in the dragnet years ago. That being said, the firm has stated that it ~"has seen no evidence of malicious access" on these accounts, so affected accounts are likely still safe.

The sensible thing to do in this case clearly is to reset your password. Several of Dropbox's users are present on Windows, and may have sensitive files that are now vulnerable to being hacked.

Users also share their usernames and passwords between services, so those who get caught in this hack should ensure to get their details changed if they share it with other apps and services.

If you suspect your account may have been hacked, have received a notification that your account has been hacked or just want some peace of mind – check out this link to learn how to reset your password on Dropbox, and ensure that linked accounts are changed.

You can now Interop Unlock any x50 series Lumia devices

lumia-950

Interop Unlock on Windows 10 Mobile has been around for more than a year now. Unfortunately though, Interop Unlock wasn't available on some of Microsoft's latest Windows 10 Mobile devices. This includes the Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, Lumia 650 and the Lumia 550. Now, some developers at XDA Developers were able to Interop Unlock the Lumia x50 devices. With Interop Unlock, you can make several tweaks to your Windows 10 Mobile, including things like adding a custom accent, and much more.

They have also provided a how-to which you can follow to Interop Unlock your Lumia device. Needless to say, this is only for power users, and it may damage your device if you don't follow the process correctly. Therefore, if you aren't quite sure what you're doing, we don't recommend you to try this out. Here's the method:

  • Download the Windows Phone 8.0 SDK Lite from here. Once downloaded, install it on your PC
  • Enable Developer Mode on your device (Settings > Update & Security > For Developers)
  • Download the vcREG.zip file from the Attached Files section here. Once downloaded, unzip the folder
  • Connect your Lumia device to your PC via USB
  • Open Application Deployment on your PC from the Start Menu or via Cortana/Search
  • On Application Deployment, click on the Browse button, browse to the extracted vcREG.zip folder and select the vcREG_1_6_W10M.xap file. After that, deploy the app (make sure your device doesn't lock itself)
  • Once the deployment is complete, open the VCReg app on your Lumia
  • Click the ellipsis menu from the app bar, and select the x50 Series Unlock button (if it shows an error about a missing Acer file, just ignore the error)
  • After that, click on the Step 1 button. Clicking on the Step 1 button will show a dialog asking you to do the following before clicking on Step 2:
    • Download and extract the i386.zip from here
    • Open a CMD as Admin on the extracted folder
    • Now go to the vcREG.zip extracted folder which we extracted earlier in the process
    • Copy the file acer.service.acersystemservice.spkg and put it in a folder inside that extracted folder (call it anything you like)
    • Then enter the following command: iutool -v -p "path to the folder that has acer.service.acersystemservice.spkg (In our case, the command was: iutool -v -p "D:\Windows\Interop\vcREG\acer" )
    • Once done, the device should reboot
    • After the device has rebooted, you need to copy the files newndtksvc.dll and ndtksvc.dll into your phone's Documents folder (you can find both of the files in the extracted vcREG folder)
    • Now, open the VCReg app on your phone, go to the x50 Series Unlock page from the ellipsis menu and click on Step 2
    • The app will ask you to reboot your device, so go ahead and reboot it
    • Once the reboot is done, open the app's x50 Series Unlock page again and click on Step 3
    • Lastly, you'll have to reboot one more time
  • Now, you need to open the app again and go to the x50 Series Unlock page. From there, click on the "Live Interop/Capability Unlock" checkbox and hit Apply
  • After that, your device should now be interop unlocked

Once again, please do not try this unless you know what you're doing. If you were able to Interop Unlock your device, you can use the app Interop Tools  to apply some tweaks on your phone. The app also includes a Registry Browser which you can also use to tweak your phone — but once again, this can be very risky.

Battlefield 1 Open Beta now available for the Xbox One

Battlefield_1

As promised, Battlefield 1's Open Beta is now available for the Xbox One. Battlefield 1 is the latest game in the Battlefield series from EA and Dice. The Open Beta for the game includes one map, and that's the Sinia Desert map. However, when the public release is launched, the game will include some other maps. In case you missed it, the game features the following modes:

  • Conquest: An all-time fan favorite of Battlefield players, Conquest is a large-scale game mode with up to 64 players fighting for the control of key objectives. With large armies on foot or behind the wheel and the addition of fearsome Behemoths, Conquest brings together all the elements of the signature Battlefield All-Out War.
  • Rush: A 24-player mode where the Attacking force must find and destroy the Defending force's Telegraph Posts, which can be used to call in artillery strikes. The Defenders can deny the Attackers their mission by disarming explosives they plant on the telegraph positions. Should the Telegraph Posts be destroyed, the Defenders must fall back to the next sector and protect the Telegraph Posts there.

Here's the trailer of the game:

Battlefield 1 will launch publicly for the Xbox One and PC on the 21st of October. If you order the game with EA Access, you'll get a small amount of discount which is pretty nice. If you would like to try the Open Beta out, you can get it from the Windows Store here, and pre-order the game from the links below:
