Windows 10 Creators Update to arrive earlier than expected

Last month, we reported that Microsoft is planning to release the Windows 10 Creators Update in April. We reported that the Creators Update would have the version number of 1704. But now, Microsoft is set to release the Creators Update in March instead, according to a source close to Microsoft. As a result, the Creators Update will now have a version number of 1703 which indicates the March 2017 release date — Microsoft even has multiple references to version 1703 on MSDN docs.

It is important to note that at one point in development, Microsoft was planning to release the Creators Update in April. In fact, Dell even confirmed the Creators Update's release date at CES days after our exclusive report.

As we reported, however, the Windows 10 Creators Update reached the "feature complete" status in early February. Microsoft has been working on polishing some of the new features and fixing some of the bugs in the Creators Update over the past few weeks, most of which are already available to Windows Insiders.

Microsoft has also removed the Insider Preview indicator watermark from the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build, which suggests the company is getting closer to the public release of the Creators Update. We suspect the Windows 10 Creators Update will RTM (Released to Manufacturing) sometime very soon — and that's not surprising to see as Microsoft has already started compiling builds for the next major update to Windows 10, codenamed Redstone 3.

Even though the Windows 10 Creators Update was initially planned to be released in April, it isn't clear why exactly Microsoft is releasing it a month earlier. However, Redmond did cut the MyPeople feature, which was one of the headline features of the Creators Update, from this release — and that's possibly one of the reasons why Microsoft is releasing the Creators Update slightly earlier.

The Windows 10 Creators Update or Windows 10 Version 1703 will be available as a free update to existing Windows 10 users as usual.
