vlc-360

The play-anything video player VLC has just added another arrow to its quiver. In the latest version of its technical preview 3.0 the app now supports 360 degree video.

The VideoLan developed the technology, which supports 360 degree photos, panoramas and videos,  with the help of 360-degree camera maker Giroptic and the feature can now be tried on Widows and the Mac.

The app features:

  • Playback of 360 Videos following the Spatial Video spec
  • Playback of 360 Photos and Panoramas following the Spherical spec
  • Display modes with Zoom, Little planet and Reverse little planet
  • Control it with your Mouse and Keyboard
  • Open Source and Cross-platform, accelerated with OpenGL and Direct3D11

The final version should roll out by the end of the month, and will eventually head to phones and tablets, where it will support gyroscopic control in place of mouse and keyboard.

The app will also eventually support VR headsets like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift and 360-degree audio support including head tracking headphones, with those features expected to arrive next year.
