Net Market Share today released its data for the first month of 2017. The latest data from Net Market Share shows a slight growth for Windows 10 as per usual. According to the latest data, Windows 10 is finally powering more than 25% of desktops in the world. The OS show a slight bump in January 2017, as it claimed 24.36% of the market back in December 2016.
For comparison, Windows 7 is still the most popular operating system in the market with 47.20% share — however, the OS saw a slight fall in market share as it claimed 48.34% of the market in December. Weirdly enough, Windows XP's market share also increased in January — the OS now claims 9.17% of the market. This is actually quite interesting as Windows XP also saw a pretty growth last month where the OS saw a rise of 1.17%.
Other operating systems such as Apple's macOS' market share also increased slightly. The OS claimed 2.31% of the market in December, but it saw an increase of 0.44% in January which means it now claims 2.75% of the market.
The majority of Windows users are still running Windows 7, which is quite concerning to see, at least for Microsoft as Windows 7 is now almost 8 years old. Microsoft recently recommended Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10 early, considering the support for Windows 7 is set to end in 2020 — but it'll likely take quite a while until enterprise customers and large organizations start migrating their systems to Windows 10.
