Your next Insider Build for Windows 10 could be smaller than a 1 GB download, Microsoft has said on the Windows Blog.
Microsoft has been using Unified Update Platform (UUP) for Windows 10 Insider Builds since December last year, and have today delivered some interesting feedback on the performance of the compression technology.
Updates sent via UUP only deliver the bits that have changed since the last update, and for regular Windows 10 users after the Creators update this could mean a 65% saving in download size when updating from one major version of the OS to another, which should mean faster downloads.
For Windows Insiders, who get frequent builds with small changes in between each, new OS builds could shrink as small as 1GB or less each.
Unfortunately the advantage will not be seen by most users when they upgrade from the Anniversary Update, as that version of the OS does not include underlying technology yet.
Microsoft also warns that Windows Insiders may not always get a differential download packages as a baseline build has to be set for differential download packages and if that baseline build is newer than the build Windows Insiders are updating from (in the case where they are not on the latest flight) – they will receive a larger download.
