Twitter will not count @usernames toward your Tweet’s 140 characters from now on

Following the feedback from its users, Twitter today finally announced that they will not be counting @usernames toward your Tweet's 140 characters. So next time when you reply for a Twitter conversation involving several people, you don't have to worry about compressing your thoughts to fit into Twitter's 140 characters limit. They are also making few changes to simplify Twitter conversations:

  • Who you are replying to will appear above the Tweet text rather than within the Tweet text itself, so you have more characters to have conversations.
  • You can tap on "Replying to…" to easily see and control who's part of your conversation.
  • When reading a conversation, you'll actually see what people are saying, rather than seeing lots of @usernames at the start of a Tweet.

With these changes, Twitter believes that you can focus more on what a discussion is about, and who is having it. You can learn more about how replies work here.
