Earlier this month we reported that, according to an unsourced slide posted by Windows Phone site AAWP , Samsung's new Galaxy S8 will have a Continuum for Phone-like feature which would allow users to access a desktop-like experience by connecting to a full-sized monitor.
Now TrustedReviews report that a trademark filing has shown up for Samsung Dex, which would be:
Application software, namely, for projecting the screen of mobile device to displays via computer peripheral devices and wireless networks; computer peripheral devices; computer software for wireless network communications; computer software, namely, software for controlling user interface mode adaption
The feature was also confirmed by Evan Blass posting on Venturebeat where he noted:
As The Guardian noted, one value-added feature is the ability to connect the handsets to a monitor for a desktop view of Android that can be controlled via keyboard and mouse, like Microsoft Continuum, called Samsung DeX — though it requires an optional, HDMI-equipped dock.
As we noted earlier, in some ways the feature being made mainstream by Samsung would be good for Microsoft, as it would introduce the concept of using your only phone as a desktop productivity vehicle to the masses, and it may stimulate the development of peripherals, particularly the USB-C monitors which are becoming more common.
