Last week, Microsoft officially announced the name of the upcoming Windows 10 update: the Creators Update (codenamed "Redstone 2"). Today, the company is releasing the first set of features for the Creators Update to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring with build 14959. Most of these features are still under development, so things may feel a bit unpolished at the moment.
With Windows 10 Build 14959, Microsoft is introducing a new update platform called the Unified Update Platform which will essentially download the bits you need for a new update. For instance, when there's a new Windows 10 Insider preview, Windows Update won't download the whole build — instead, it will only update the required bits:
One of the biggest community and customer benefits of UUP is the reduction you'll see in download size on PCs. We have converged technologies in our build and publishing systems to enable differential downloads for all devices built on the Mobile and PC OS. A differential download package contains only the changes that have been made since the last time you updated your device, rather than a full build. As we rollout UUP, this will eventually be impactful for PCs where users can expect their download size to decrease by approximately 35% when going from one major update of Windows to another. We're working on this now with the goal of supporting this for feature updates after the Windows 10 Creators Update; Insiders will see this sooner.
Microsoft is going to add a lot more features over the coming months, and users in the Insider program will be the first to be able to try them out. And with the new Unified Update Platform, updating to new builds should be a lot moother! As for everyone else, the Creators Update is set to arrive in early 2017. In the meantime, make sure to stay tuned to MSPU for the latest news and more on the Windows 10 Creators Update.
