Halo Wars: Definitive Edition seems to be headed to Steam

The original Halo Wars was a hit back in 2009. It took Bungie's phenomenon to some incredibly different top-down battlegrounds and proved that some real time strategy games could be great on consoles – just like how the original Halo: Combat Evolved proved the same for first person shooters. It recently got a Windows 10 exclusive PC port as a bonus for people who purchased the ultimate edition of Halo Wars 2, and it seems like it might be heading to Valve's incredibly popular PC gaming platform, Steam.

This news comes from Gamecheat13, a Halo leaker and modder who managed to get his hands on a non-UWP build of Halo Wars 2.

This is an interesting development for sure, although not exactly the most surprising. Microsoft has continued to bring some of their games to Steam over the years, with one of the biggest releases in recent years being Quantum Break. Microsoft has avoided putting any of the main Halo games on Steam, however- while there is data that suggests they intended to bring the original Halo trilogy over at one point, it never happened. Both Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike did join Steam, but they were mobile focused spin-offs.

It's also going to be interesting to see how Microsoft handles this. To look at it from a potential business perspective, putting the original Halo Wars – and only the original Halo Wars – on Steam might get some users to go to the Windows Store for its sequel.

Finally, it's worth noting that this would likely be a standalone version of the game- Halo Wars 2 would have to be brought over for it to be an Ultimate Edition extra, after all. It's likely that it would become standalone on the Windows Store as well if this happened to be the case.
